Jelena Dokic's estranged father Damir has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for making death threats against the Australian ambassador in Belgrade.
"The sentence is inappropriate and we are going to appeal," Dokic's lawyer Bosiljka Djukic told Reuters.
"We hope that the higher court instance will annul this sentence."
Dokic was arrested in early May after local media reports quoting him as saying he would "attack the ambassador and her husband with a stinger missile".
Police found two hand grenades and 20 bullets in his house for which Dokic had no permit, in addition to seven hunting rifles and a handgun which he owned legally.
Dokic's alleged threats came after his daughter Jelena, once ranked fourth on the WTA tour and battling to rediscover her form, described the torment she endured under him to Australia's Sports & Style magazine.
Their fallout began in 1999 when Damir was cautioned for drunk and disorderly behaviour at the Edgbaston tournament in England and then lay down in traffic outside the courts.
The acrimonious relationship between father and daughter hit a new low in January at the Australian Open, when Jelena ruled out any chance of a reconciliation.

@ rc_alcock - nice to see real Alcock here ;-)
I just love Jelena Dokic she is such a good player seen her at eastbourne some years back now lovely young lady.
Have to say though her father is a monster and treated her very bad he deserves 15 years not monthes for what he's done.
Hope Jelena can get through this terrible time bless her.Good luck
Igor, people like Zamfir are a walking advertisment for a strong legal system.
I wouldn’t deal with you Zamfir unless you are not so hateful..

silver N......
You need to read posts more carefully and try and improve you spelling.
Hope she's not affect? She's deeply affected. She has some talent. Growing up with a father like that, it's very reasonable to think she has mantal problem as well.
Zamfir I think you are also in a little need of some mental healthcare, maybe you are a more deserving case then Damir Dokic!!
The father obviously needs mental health care not a prison sentence. I hope Jelena is not affected negatively to much over this situation she deserves and is owed much luck in life from now on.
lol @ miguel b
nice idea.

you say you do not have a problem, but there is evidence in comment 16 and 17 which juxtaposes this statement. the generalization of my people in these message boards is a shameful representation of the ideology of many westerners, who beleive that they are better people than us. this assumption might be due to the fact that western media heavily distorted the truth about Serbia, both during and after the Yugoslav War. without a first hand acount of our country, i beleive it is unfair to make subjective statements concerning the behaviour of our people.
simply put, i know my country has attributed a fair few negative traits over the years, and that Serbians are usualy focused upon when criminals are in question. but that does not give you an excuse to be racist.
Instead of jailing him they should open a new private tropical island ( they could call it Anthrax Island ) and set up a celebrity reality tv show on the survivors theme - place 5 of them on the island with alcohol but no food and 1 large machete - and see who is the last one left alive
The first week's contestants could have a tennis related theme to them - maniac psychotic or seriously disturbed mega ego freaky abusive fathers of female tennis players
- Jim Pierce , Stefano Capriati , Roland Jaeger , Peter Graf , Damir Dokic , Yuri Sharapova , Richard Williams would be my suggested line up - they could all be ferried over from the mainland in designer straitjackets with a picture of their tennis star daughter(s) on the front - Now who wouldn't pay big money to watch that ?
good parents should be respected...un educated children does not respect good parents... bad parents are shameful to their children... Parents could not forget their children but children can easily forget bad parents....unless you as a child does not have backbone!!!!!!!!!!!
