International Football - Jones swaps Germany for USA

Eurosport - Fri, 12 Jun 22:18:00 2009

Germany international Jermaine Jones has informed the German Football Association that he wishes to play for the United States in future.

FOOTBALL Jermaine Jones Germany v England - 0

Jones, who holds dual nationality, has played three times for Germany but only in friendlies after narrowly missing the cut for the squad that finished as runners-up at Euro 2008.

The 27-year-old Schalke 04 midfielder is taking advantage of FIFA's recent decision to remove the age limit on changing national teams.

"Jermaine Jones has informed the DFB that...he has decided to play for the American national team soon," the DFB said in a statement.

Germany coach Joachim Loew said he wished Jones, whose last appearance for Germany was in November against England, all the best in the future.

"We have noted Jermaine Jones's decision and we accept it," Loew said. "I wish him all the best in his sports future."

  1. He has little technical ability, but is a good hustler. I'm not sure we want him.

  2. Good for him. But, the US will still be worthless!! Better stick to Baseball, Football or Basketball.

  3. Well, if he hasn't played that many matches and he is 27 y/o then it is good that he plays for a team that will give him some iternational experience.

  5. he might get more play time, but play time on a horrible team does not do much for you. he should of just stayed with germany and worked alot harder to make the 1st team, atleast he would be playing with quality players.
