England prop Phil Vickery will captain the British and Irish Lions for Saturday's game with Western Province at Newlands in Cape Town, the fifth game of their tour of South Africa.
Vickery (pictured), who led England to the final of the 2007 World Cup, takes over from tour captain Paul O'Connell and Brian O'Driscoll, who have worn the skipper's armband earlier on tour.
The Wasps player leads a totally different starting line-up from the one that defeated the Sharks 39-3 in Durban on Wednesday as competition for Test places hots up/
Vickery is one of several players in the side looking to further his chances of selection for next week's first Test and help the Lions to maintain their 100 per cent record in South Africa.
Also looking to cement their Test places with strong performances will be wings Tommy Bowe and Ugo Monye, and fly-half Stephen Jones.
Another decent showing from prop Andrew Sheridan could also put him in the frame for Test selection, as he packs down in the front row alongside Vickery and Wales hooker Rees Williams.
"There is now a competitive edge developing as we approach the Test series. That is how it should be," said head coach Ian McGeechan.
"I reminded the players when I told them the team to play Western Province that we were not selecting the Test side until next Tuesday following the Southern Kings match.
"Phil Vickery is one of the many leaders in the squad. It is just reward for a thoroughly professional player who will play in his 10th Lions match. Vicks is a former captain of England and he played three Lions Tests against Australian in 2001.
"No starting players are backing up from the Sharks match as we continue our desire to see all players involved in at least two full matches prior to Test selection."
Fit-again flanker Martyn Williams starts at openside after recovering from a shoulder injury and forms a back row with powerful duo Andy Powell and blindside Joe Worsley.
Also up front, Donncha O'Callaghan and Nathan Hines pack down in the second row together for first time together, with the latter still in with a chance of making the Test squad.
Keith Earls and Riki Flutey - starting for the first time on tour after being sidelined by injury - form a lightweight centre partnership, while good displays from full-back Rob Kearney and scrum-half Harry Ellis could keep them in the running for the Test 22.
British and Irish Lions: 15-Rob Kearney, 14-Tommy Bowe, 13-Keith Earls, 12-Riki Flutey, 11-Ugo Monye, 10-Stephen Jones, 9-Harry Ellis; 8-Andy Powell, 7-Martyn Williams, 6-Joe Worsley, 5-Nathan Hines, 4-Donncha O'Callaghan, 3-Phil Vickery (capt), 2-Matthew Rees, 1-Andrew Sheridan,
Replacements: 16-Ross Ford, 17-Euan Murray, 18-Simon Shaw, 19-Tom Croft, 20-Mike Blair, 21-James Hook, 22-Gordon D'Arcy.

TA lm welsh and agree Shane is well wide of his best, but hes done this before in his career , hope he finds form again as he scares the opposition cause hes like a wriggly worm of a kid on smarties at his best. If that makes any sense. The southerners tend to go for bulky crash it over wingers (Habana excepted)so anything different makes them think, like Mears in the loose. Who ever captains them, whoever`s selected l will back them to the hilt, on a totally different note, hell of s game between France and the All Blacks, well done Froggies.
allmacpheez don't be a sheep and use the racist card everytime someone comments on another nationality. i am english and proud but I have my views on other nationalities but don't feel the need to air them in public. The whole point of a lions tour is for all four nations to pull together as one, ask any lions player, something sugruejames does not understand. I doubt very much he/she is even a rugby supporter or at best is a fairweather one.
omg how racist can sugruejames get i think he should be banned from this im reporting him
apologies to andyexile2003 i may have not worded myself correctly when i said everyone i should have said the majority of people. i myself read all the comments and it is good to here other peoples views and i have to agree with the points you made. i agree about sheridan and vickery and yes im english. but i also think that shane williams is not performing but im sure there will be a lot of welsh people disagree with that. but hey thats why we live in a democracy
**********************************LIONS**************** ********************************
I have read all the comments and most of them make sence apart from the chap who says we are all whingers. Don't forget you only get picked for any of the top jobs not because you are the best just that you went to the right school. O'connell has cooked his goose I think. A tall man with no weight he does usually make the game line but has been exceptionally poor on tour. It was too much of a burnden to make him captain. Sheridan? I fail to see where he is as good as bleated by the English media. During the 6 nations he was turned inside out. Croft is a starter as he offers so many options. Therefor go for a bigger slower second row.Vickery is a mystery. I think they got him mixed up with Steve Thompson. Todays team is very weak I agree. Think this is going to be very tight.
i find it all a bit bizarre that everyone on hear critisizes about the teams picked but guess what!!! there all on here making negative comments, why arent they in south africa coaching the team. oh thats right there not professional coaches. there professional whingers.!!!!!!!
Vickery doesn't deserve to be captain. I don't know why he was picked in the first place to go on the tour. Probably because of his "experience"
It is a pity that some of your correspondents can only use destructive, bigoted criticism. Fluey played well earlier and you don't get experience by sitting on the bench. As for being a Kiwi, if you took all the "Colonials" out of Home nations teams both Cricket and Rugby, a lot of results would have been different. Why not just wish whatever Lions side is put out the Best of Luck and the hope that each performs to the utmost of their ability.
It's professional now so the highest bidder and your career is what matters So if Flutey and Hines play for the Lions I, for one, wish them well. Also Gatland has been a good servant of the game in the British Isles, so neither do I have a problem with him. All of the 4 home nations have benefited from 'foreigners' playing for us. So why complain now?.
Vickery should not be captain. Hes a sinbin machine and i dont think that he should have even been brought on tour, hobson will take his place at wasps next year.
well warren gatlin is a kiwi, so whats he doing on the tour!! get a grip you lot.
sorta agree with you about Flutey. he is a mercenary no doubt. he wasnt good enough to get inot the all blacks, so plied his trade over here.
but if qualifying by residency is the issue, then Nathan Hines has to stay at home too (Aussie)
a difficult one ..
flutey is not British, he should have stayed in New Zealand.
Once you have a cap for one country, at whatever level, you should not be allowed to play for another country.
bet Vickery gets a yellow card
earls is twenty one he has another tour in him
only bowe, monya and stephen jones are gonna make the test team out of that selestion, bout the worst side picked so but still should be alright.go lions
Boks 3-0
The coaching staff see all that goes on at the training sessions which I'm sure has some influence on this decision. Good luck to him and the rest of the boys! Another win and some strong performances and I'll be happy.
C'mon the Lions!!
Interesting. It's now or never for some of these though Earls, Ellis and Sheridan to name just three.
The only thing stopping Vickery ffrom nailin down that test spot is his temper. Beginnin of the tour i thought, whats the point in takin this guy? hes too old, and not that good at what he does. hes proved me wrong in the games so far, good work-rate, only marred by his tendency to get binned. Adam Jones is still a huge contender for that side of the scrum
