Premier League - Martins: I want Toon stay

Eurosport - Fri, 12 Jun 16:28:00 2009

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins admits he would like to help Newcastle back into the Premier League, but he knows the crisis-torn club are likely to sell him.

With Newcastle managerless and up for sale after their relegation to the English Championship, it would be easy for Martins to look for an escape route from St James' Park.

The former Inter Milan star insists he would be happy to stay but, with Arsenal and other top European clubs interested, it seems certain Newcastle will opt to cash in on his 10 million pounds valuation to soften the financial blow of relegation.

"I hope I am not sold," Martins told the Evening Gazette: "If the club decide to sell me, I have no choice but to go. But my aim is to stay and help get Newcastle promoted next season.

"I love living in Newcastle, and there are few better places to live and play.

"I know the club is for sale and that is hard for the fans. Yet I hear there could be some light at the end of the tunnel eventually."

Meanwhile, talks over the future ownership of Newcastle were ongoing as interested parties prepared to make their moves.

It is understood the front-runners in the race to buy out owner Mike Ashley are ready to conduct due diligence as they prepare to firm up their intention to make a formal bid.

There have been reports on Tyneside that a South African-led consortium is among the most advanced potential bidders, while former chairman Freddy Shepherd has been repeatedly mentioned.

However, sources close to the club have suggested there is strong interest from elsewhere.

Investment bankers Seymour Pierce, whose chairman Keith Harris is handling the sale, has been in contact with up to four prospective purchasers, including the Singapore-based Profitable Group, but there is still some way to go before the club could change hands.

The players are due back for pre-season training on July 1, with the Championship campaign starting in eight weeks' time, although there is as much work to be done on the playing side as there is behind the scenes before then.

Newcastle currently have no manager - Joe Kinnear's contract has expired and Alan Shearer was employed only for the final eight games of last season.

The 38-year-old former England striker has made no secret of his desire to take the job on a permanent basis, but the current regime has little intention of appointing either him or anyone else with several of the prospective new owners having indicated they want to take that decision themselves.

  7. If thats true and martins wants to stay, keep him no matter what, i think he would rip the championship defenders apart, just like Andy cole did, personally he is one of the very few that have tried to fight for Newcastle in the back end of the season, dont forget this bloke was playing through the pain barrier, he only made it onto the pitch with injections, he could have walked away but he didnt, if Newcastle do one right thing this summer is to keep Martins at all costs.

  9. This could be backroom politics, but if Martins is actually being sincere all cynics just turn out to be spiteful and ignorant... cos he's always had lots of chances to leave the club. Wat happened to the Newcastle loyalty of those days? turning on all your players cos most of em were complete rubbish. As long as he's officially a toon, he's got my support... at least save the bashing till he leaves.

  11. If my memory serves me right (and I must admit that excess alcohol on that glorious day clouds my recollection of Match of the Day) but didn't Martins have an excellent chance of scoring late in the Villa game (a goal that would surely have saved NUFC), which he missed? If I'm right, then I'm surprised he's been forgiven so soon. I'm with the synical commentators here, I think Martins is trying to be clever and hoping that his stated loyalty will hasten his exit to sunnier climes. Thankfully, sunnier climes will not mean Sunderland, he's a luxury we don't need or want.

  12. "Martins: I want Toon stay" Sure or not???? Just pretending that you're loyal to Toon... Ask yourself how much have u contributed to the club, another "Injury Prone". just f@#$ of from Toon, selfish @#$%.

  13. connolly 25,
Then you tell them you love the club and the fans and love living here that much that you will play for us next season for a reduced salary of £25000 a week, that should do the trick and good luck.
looks like connolly is going to pay his wages,no doubt from his enormous piggybank,an absolute @#$%.your full of compromise,i wouldn,t let him play for nowt, get rid.

  15. Personally, i would want him to stay and help NC back into EPL but as a Nigerian on the other hand, i think he will lose his shirt in the national team....for those who is cry foul on Martins, cant yal see how many months he didnt play at all? NC got relegated because throughout the season most of their best players were injured and they hardly play together in one game. Blame it on injury ppl. If the team got a back up they wont be in the relegation zone when those players came back. Martins has chance to leave last yr but he refused, so if he said he wanted to stay now is that suppose to be fake? Get real ppl, Martins is as loyal as he always try his best on the field. You got my respect any day Martins! And for the scum who said he is 48, i guess he is ur father or ur mum boyfriend.
I watch NC game cos of Martins after Shearer left.

  19. Of course he wants to stay, no one who would want him would be able to pay his rediculous wages. Let's face it, if these players really wanted to stay for the good of the club then they would offer to reduce their salaries....all they are doing with these kinds of statements are making sure they continue to get well paid no matter what happens and also that if they are sold they keep some of the transfer fee.

Martins isn't as great as everyone makes him out to be either. He is quick, but has very poor control, a poor first touch and is so erratic in his runs his team mates cannot be expected to pick his runs out as quite often he seems to take any options than the one he should, plus he does also let his head drop if things don't go right for him straight away in games.. He scores some very good goals, but misses the easy ones he NEEDS to score and it all boils down to not being able to be counted on to perform consistently.

This type of player is why newcastle got relegated in the first place. Too much show, not enough end product, and too much in the mould of a 'luxury' player that would best serve a bigger squad of a top four team to come off the bench...alas they won't want him and newcastle are stuck paying his wages until they find someone who does - football is just getting rediculous nowadays!

From Scottie, on Sat 13 Jun 9:31AM
  20. If Newcastle keeps any players on premium salary this is the one to keep. Not a Magpie fan but I've always liked the team and mostly admired Martins. He's an awesome striker on his day and always exciting to watch. Can't believe some of the negative posts from Magpie fans... but then they are Geordies.
