Magpies take defender on trial

Sat 12 Jul, 04:00 PM

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has reportedly taken Metz defender Sebastien Bassong on trial at St James' Park.Bassong is set to leave Metz after they were relegated from France's top flight last season. The Lorraine club finished bottom of Ligue 1 with a total of 24 points from 38 games.

The 22-year-old has previously been linked with Premier League rivals Everton.

Keegan is looking to bolster his backline after the summer departures of Stephen Carr, Peter Ramage and David Rozehnal and Bassong could win a deal if he impresses.

The Paris-born player has made 79 appearances for Metz over the last three seasons and scored one goal after graduating from the club's B team. He played 19 times for the club during the last campaign.

  1. How many times have we seen proven quality win anything? Half of Man U or Arsenal teams in recent years have been either kids or relative unknowns....albeit Arsenal haven't won much but they're always right up there. I think we need more than one or two top quality signings for stupid prices when we can get potentially good signings that will gel better and still have money to pay the wages

  2. Typical of NUFC, no ambition as usual. Another 11th-12th finish at end of the season.

  3. How soon people forget this is Keegan not Allerdyce. He buys youth and fields attacking teams. How fast is this kid, that's my only question.

Sir John personally bought Shearer, but apart from that, Keegan didn't go for big names and he did alright last time.

  4. time to bring some proven quality in, we need 2 midfielders and 2 defenders and a striker. or its the same as usual 11-12 place or worse and 50 odd thousand fans don't need to see that

  7. cant see how he can impress considering his team finished bottom of the french league, but i always like youngesters in the team for the future and he has made his way through the ranks! prefer some proven players coming through the door!
