125cc: Talmacsi holds off Smith

Gabor Talmacsi held off a strong challenge from Britain's Bradley Smith to take pole position for the German 125cc GP.

The Hungarian struck late on with the track continuing to dry after morning rain; his best time of 1:27.552 beating his provisional pole time from Friday.

The 17-year-old Smith had several hot laps in which to target Talmacsi's time, but found himself caught up in traffic as 39 riders attempted to squeeze around the short eastern German circuit.

Smith posted a fastest lap of 1:27.645 and showed signs he will be able to contend for his first 125cc victory.

Home favourite Stefan Bradl was third on the grid, with Simone Corsi completing an all-Aprilia front row.

Smith had to recover from a fall in the morning practice session, a spill that gives him the unenviable record of most frequent faller across all three MotoGP classes this season.

The Oxford rider has crashed 13 times in 2008, one more than fellow 125cc rider and compatriot Danny Webb.

Spain's Pol Espargaro came off at high speed on a downhill section but did not aggravate his existing collarbone injury.

  1. It's time Bradley converted one of these front row starts to a top step finish. Who Would have thought at the begining of the season that Scot Redding would have been the first Brit to get a win in 125's so come on Bradley get it together.
