Championship - Transfer Talk: Go West

Eurosport - Sat, 12 Jul 12:34:00 2008

Frustrated ambitions? Unfulfilled promise? Nice hair? If ever a man was destined for Major League Soccer it was Darren Huckerby.

FOOTBALL: Norwich City forward Darren Huckerby - 0

The man who once single-handledly put Manchester United to the sword as a Coventry City player in a December 1997 Premier League fixture at Highfield Road is set to swap East Anglia for the sunny climes of California, with Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail reporting that he has opted to join the San Jose Earthquakes from Norwich City.

Huckerby was on the verge of a move to Toronto FC - hence the Globe and Mail's interest in the story - but having visited the club's BMO Field stadium he apparently expressed concerns about playing on the artificial turf there and opted for the Earthquakes.

Transfer Talk is sure that San Jose's 18-degree average winter temperature advantage over Toronto had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Another player set to depart the Championship for pastures new is Watford's gargantuan centre-half Danny Shittu, although his suitcase will probably contain considerably fewer pairs of shorts and flip-flops than Huckerby's because Rangers is his destination.

Pseudo-Welsh striker Freddy Eastwood's Wolves nightmare will be brought to an end when countryman of sorts Chris Coleman brings him to Coventry for £1 million, while the Daily Express reports that Hearts winger Andrew Driver will instruct his agent to, ahem, drive through a move to either Burnley or Sheffield United.

With all this moving going on Crystal Palace midfielder Carl Fletcher was beginning to feel a little bit queasy, so he's stuck his head in the sand and told Plymouth Argyle to go whistle, much to the chagrin of Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock.
