Robert Huff pulled together a fantastic lap to set the fastest time in the second practice in Estoril.
He had a relatively quiet session until the final moments when he put his Chevrolet ahead of the field by a tenth of a second with a time of 1:48.079.
BMW Team Germany driver Joerg Mueller recovered from a 360-degree spin early in the session to set the second fastest lap, with Huff's team mate Alain Menu in third position demonstrating that Chevrolet are strong so far this weekend. Augusto Farfus put the other BMW Team Germany car into fourth, with Tom Coronel in fifth as the leading SEAT. Nicola Larini and Felix Porteiro finished in sixth and seventh positions, and Rickard Rydell rounded off the top eight with the first of the SEAT Sport diesel cars.
Sergio Hernandez had a fantastic session as he leapt up to third at one point with a time of 1:48.804, which placed him in ninth place overall by the close. This showed that the Independent cars have pace this weekend and may be real challengers for the top ten places in qualifying.
The drivers were pushing in this session: Mueller's spin was one of a number of incidents as Alessandro Zanardi left the track at Turn 1 and embedded the car in the gravel trap. Ibrahim Okyay failed to complete the session, and James Thompson's Honda also suffered from more engine trouble and stopped on the side of the track.
With Chevrolet, SEAT and BMW also finding pace throughout the sessions so far this weekend the qualifying may throw up some surprises and is set to be a close run session.
