International Football - Donovan slams Beckham

Eurosport - Sun, 12 Jul 17:49:00 2009

David Beckham has come under a blistering attack from Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan just ahead of his return to the MLS team.

FOOTBALL 2008 Los Angeles Galaxy David Beckham - 0

In a new book due out later this month, Donovan claims Beckham has demonstrated little commitment to the Galaxy cause and been a negative influence on the team since the ousting of former coach Ruud Gullit.

"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us," Donovan says in 'The Beckham Experiment', authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl. "As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways - on the field, off the field."

He continued: "Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone's paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard."

Donovan, who is the United States captain and wears the Galaxy armband in Beckham's absence, also questioned the former England skipper's leadership abilities, claiming he is too often silent in team meetings.

"Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain," he said. "Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn't happened. And I don't think that's too much for us to expect. Especially when he's brought all this on us."

Beckham's first season in MLS was a largely miserable experience as an unbalanced Galaxy team struggled all year and missed out on the play-offs, with Gullit quitting before the end of the campaign.

Gullit's departure, which came a little over a month after Beckham's Galaxy debut, is the moment Donovan believes the light went out for the club's marquee player.

"When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing," Donovan said. "He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.

"Somewhere along the way - and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go - he just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-huh, I'm not doing it anymore'."

  1. David Beckam is a true professional football player. He leads by example in his exceptional skill level. The USA players have done very well recently in the Confed cup, but have a way to go still before they can prove to be as good as the European football players. Beckam does not have to be "loud mouth" to prove his skill level, unlike certain other players. His track record proves this!!! As they say there will always be the talkers!!! and the dooers!!! David gets on with playing the game and he does not have to talk "loudly" about it! I have so much respect for him he is a great role model... keep it up Becks!

  5. nice one donovan, about time someone told beckham the truth and what a pr@ck in his respone! plain english DAVID you took the money from LA GALAXY then went to Italy for the coveragage (GOD FORBID WE FORGET BECKS+POSH) you aint no CRUYFF if you were that good then how come you went to the backwater of SOCCER??? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ you could have a been great but your just a global advert for greed

  6. Donovan = big fish in a fish tank, Becks = big fish in a sea through service and dedication to his chosen profession, even though I'm not a huge fan of him mainly due to his personal life. His football career can't be doubted, specially by a never quite was like Donovan.

  7. Look at the results Becks had in Milan...at 34...and look at what Landon did in Bayern...oh wait, that's right, he could not get oof the bench or make the team, for the 3rd time in Europe he goes back to the US with his tail tucked between his legs and tries to play it off like the US team was his first option LOL...fekkin loser. Becks is a much better player and has proven it...Like he said Saturday, 17 years playing for the largest clubs, with the greatest players, managed by some of the great managers and never once has he been questioned, but this waste of space, non fotty playing @#$% Donovan decides to do so? Are you serious? So Zidane, Kaka, Raul, Casillas, etc...etc....etc....and the list goes on and on, all these GREAT players that have and continue to praise Becks hard work and proffesionalism and how he is a GREAT teammate, they are all wrong and this scrub of a player, Donovan is right? Sure...

To look no further all you have to see is Becks last season at Madrid, where he was benched for signing with LA during the season, most would have just taken it and gone to collect checks, but Becks played harder, made the starting team again, and what happened? They won or tied 16 out of the last 17 games and won the league on the last day, and the coach and players attribute alot of that success to the contributions of David both on and off the pitch...then he got hurt in the second to last game, should have rehabbed and sat out a few weeks, but what did he do? Went to LA and played hurt to satisfy the fans that were counting on seeing him...

Now look at his schedule this year, playing for England, then catching a flight back to play for LA the next day, just things like that...to question his work ethic is maddening...to question his play is idiotic...he has always been a set up man, he has always had great forwards to put at the end of passes, the problem with him at the Galaxy is that he has only Donovan and that basically is just no talent, full st

  8. For the people saying Landon Donavon is a better player than Becks need there head examined... he's not now and never will be a better player than Becks!

I went to watch AC Milan vs Atlanta in Serie A and Beckham was by far and away the best player on the pitch! Now having lived in the US and watching the galaxy I fully appreciate the level of Major League Soccer... Its not bad but it certainly isn't Serie A, La Liga or the Premier League and that is the fundamental problem... Donavon is a good player but untill he proves himself a world class player in any of these leagues he really isn't fit to tie beckhams laces!

Now onto the he was the better player when they were both on the pitch together... well he might have been that week or month, but form is temporary and class is perminant and Becks is definately class!

  13. the galaxy bought beckham to sell jerseys and get press, period. that realisation is half of what caused beckham to lose interest. the rest went when he realised that he was playing on a signifigantly lowered level. when you've grown up in the E.P.L. and then spent a couple of seasons on a top team in la liga going to the american MLS is bound to rob you of your motivation. if donovan wants beckham's money he should get himself signed by chelsea or man u or hell even man city. oh sorry, i forgot, they'd never have him. he couldn't handle the premiere league pace for a full half. don't believe me? what the galaxy play sometime

  14. David Beckham was more than likely in a state of catatonic shock when he realised the extent of his mistake in joining a micky mouse league that even a well trained confrence team from the UK could beat
but to me Donavans complaints seem a little OTT and say more about he attitude than beckes

  17. why dont you talk to David face to face, air what you want to say, give him time to anwser your questions, then wright your book, talk about pluging your own book so people can buy it because your to yellow to face him ,and just because he is famous that will sell books to see what you think is ture! what a load of @#$%!!! if you played as good as your mouth then you would not have to use David to sell your books,

BY THE WAY |DAVID IS A MUCH BETTER PLAYER THAN YOU THATS WHY HE GETS PAID MORE THAN YOU, NOW SWOLLOW IT AND GET A LIFE.

  20. OK This is just my personal take on things. Beckham went to the States with the best of intentions. I don't think the money was a major issue as the guy is already super-rich with a personal fortune exceeding £25,000,000 - that's without his wife's considerable earnings! I think he was disappointed at the general standard of play in the league. You have some good players - and many of them play in the EPL, some on the European mainland. But face it, if you put a top footballer in a team of average players (with exceptions!), you do not automatically become a top club. I think where Galaxy went wrong was spending all that money on one player. They should have gone for building a better overall team with the money. What they saw was $$$$ signs with Beckhams marketing potential. In other words, they didn't have the best interests of the club at heart. That Beckham is still a good player isn't in doubt. Milan would love him there permanently and they should know what they're talking about! Donovan? He's got a book to sell and controversy sells books! Maybe he's looking for a bigger payday? Only he knows what was in his mind when he started this off.
On the bright side - your league will improve because your last couple of performances
have made people sit up an take notice, and that can only be good for the game in the States.
