David Beckham has come under a blistering attack from Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan just ahead of his return to the MLS team.
In a new book due out later this month, Donovan claims Beckham has demonstrated little commitment to the Galaxy cause and been a negative influence on the team since the ousting of former coach Ruud Gullit.
"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us," Donovan says in 'The Beckham Experiment', authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl. "As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways - on the field, off the field."
He continued: "Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone's paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard."
Donovan, who is the United States captain and wears the Galaxy armband in Beckham's absence, also questioned the former England skipper's leadership abilities, claiming he is too often silent in team meetings.
"Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain," he said. "Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn't happened. And I don't think that's too much for us to expect. Especially when he's brought all this on us."
Beckham's first season in MLS was a largely miserable experience as an unbalanced Galaxy team struggled all year and missed out on the play-offs, with Gullit quitting before the end of the campaign.
Gullit's departure, which came a little over a month after Beckham's Galaxy debut, is the moment Donovan believes the light went out for the club's marquee player.
"When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing," Donovan said. "He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.
"Somewhere along the way - and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go - he just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-huh, I'm not doing it anymore'."

Donovan didn't start s***, he was interviewed and said how he felt. I deffinitly agree that he should have brought up his issues with David first., but he did not just come out of the blue to bash on Becks.
2nd off, Americans writing on this, we are all football fans first, but think about our countrymen. If a British basketball player made the NBA, most the people in our country would look down on him and really make him prove himself. So as Americans we all need to understand and accept the fact that our footballers will be judged hardly. But at the same time we have to be confident they will succeed, and hopefully over the next couple years that prejudice will start to diminish.
Brits out there, I respect Beckham as a player. But he is not nearly at the level he was at his Man U days. Now many will blame it on a lack of determination, but there is no doubting that when David and Landon were both on the pitch in L.A., Landon was the better player by far. I'm not saying that Donovan is a better player than Beckham WAS, but he is a better player now. That is a fact, please just watch any of the galaxy games both players played
Comment 73 well when i looked i saw your face
OK this thing will not let me post my original comment so I will just say this: Donovan is right in what he says and anyone who has seen a Galaxy game knows he is. However, he went about this in the wrong way. He should have told Becks to his face instead of writing about it. I think he took the cowards way out. Becks isn't much better than Donovan because he is not the complete package - mainly, he just has free kicks going for him. He has no work ethic. You guys say Donovan cannot hold a candle to Becks but fail to mention that Becks cannot hold a candle to any truly talented player from Europe or South America. He is good for an English player but as a world player, he is merely average at best. I have always liked Becks, but I am realistic about his abilities and I am not in denial about the type of player he has become. It was disappointing for all of us who wanted Becks to help raise the profile of the MLS as he claimed he wanted to do, when in reality, he just wanted a Hollywood lifestyle while earning an absurd amount of money for doing no work.
World beaters we are not, but quit slating us for being proud of our accomplishment last week. I won't lambaste your u-21 side, so please ease up. Why is there so much resentment to America trying to progress in the sport, and being fans with opinions. Are there no salty United fans who are rubbed the wrong way by Ronaldo going to Real? Any Spurs irked by Berbatov not playing the first few weeks while being a wantaway? Donovan is upset because he feels that a professional like Becks should be commited to the team he signed for, which he should be. Don't hate us yanks for trying to learn, enjoy and experience the sport, even if we call it by the wrong name. ;)
no thanks joe i'll pass but i'm sure lampshade would gladly sit on yours if he could find it. Ya wee boy. Next time I talk to you how bout you not make us Yanks look like @#$%, that would be fantastic. As for me, I too must go, the old lady is yellin at me. It's been a pleasure.
Have your self a wonderful day thelampshade2000, I hope to debate with you again sometime. As four you cstrife16, go sit on it.
I didna ken ye fer a metrasixual Donney
Gentlemen, this argument will run and run and get nowhere! We'll slag you off and you'll slag us off and none of us will agree on anything! On that basis I'll leave you to it! ( Joe, I'm not quitting!! I've had a better offer elsewhere - my meal is on the table!!)
Have fun guys!
joe seriously shut the hell up
Face it thelampshade2000, you would all be playing in the German league right now if it wasn’t for the US. Once again, Your Welcome ;-)
Beckham went to the Usa to earn massive wages and boost his profile in the states and especially hollywood, he then plays half heartedly whilst the other galaxy players who admittedly will never have his ability earn pittance compared to him, treats the club with distain saying how he wants to stay at Milan despite never offering to personally buy out his L.A contract. He played a higher percentage of Milan games than he did L.A games which you have to ask whether he was really injured half the time or just got sick of being whipped every match......Beckham started off the massive salaries yet some people warm to him......whilst a Ronado or Eto are called greedy despite both having more talent on the playing field.
As I see it and watching Donovan, it is obvious that is just whining, if he could play at European Top level he would of course leave Galaxy, but he is not that good. He may be at Galaxy but beyond that now he is pitiful to watch. All he does is prance about but I have yet to see him as good as his mouth let alone anything else he may show a little more attention to the game instead of trying to make himself a popular loud mouth who requires a ghost writer to do his book, this because his brain is a little lacking. He does not know how committed the Brit is, he is certainly not a team player even when he is wearing the shirt of the USA. So instead of writing let him show what he thinks he can do with his feet playing Soccer and stop blaming others for his inadequacies.
technically it is the bpl the barclays premier league, not the EPL as it used to be know. so much for your knowledge Nikhil. Barclays bought full naming rights to the league.
Thank you Maxx, an opinion I can totally agree with. My problem with Beckham is not that he tried to leave LA, its just that when he was here he never seemed to care. In interviews, he always said the right thing but he never showed it out on the pitch.
Richardterry1- Same old Brit thing. think they know it all and are the best even though they haven't won anything in 50 years. And when they don't like it or proved wrong stare down their noses like they own Buckingham Palace and just knock them.
I understand why most of the English will stick up for Becks no matter what. I've had the priveledge of living there for some time and in their football universe, he is a god and a living legend. Imagine if it had been the other way around? The British people and their football fans are some of the most loyal group of fans I have ever met. No matter what the circumstances, they will almost always stick up for their own. Especially Prince Becks.
Now, as an American soccer fan I also feel that I have to stick up for my own. Landon Donovan may be nowhere near the household name in sports the Sir Becks is, but he has every right to spread the truth about Becks time here in Los Angeles. How many of you who've posted on this board has ever been to the Home Depot Center, watched a Galaxy match or even sat in the stands at any US professional sporting match? Our fans are just as dedicated to their team as anyone else in the world.
I've been a season ticket holder for the Galaxy for 7 years now and have been to nearly every home match since. I'm only being completely honest here when I say that David has been nothing but a complete bust here in MLS. Our league might not be known nor respected worldwide, but I don't care about that. I only care about my team, and this whole experiment we called the "The David Beckham Circus" all but destroyed this little soccer team in LA. Sold off nearly every decent player we had at the time just to make room for a guy who never truely had his heart in the jersey he chose to wear at the time.
Now go ahead and blast me for actually sitting in the stands every week and watching this circus destroy my beloved club.
""It's like saying everyone that lives in San Fransisco is gay. ""
S**t! You mean they're not!!!
Look, no-one is really saying you're @#$% because you're American! It's just that we don't like OUR sporting heroes put down by anyone! A lot of what's written here is just banter between sports fans, and I would be the last to put a stop to that! What I do object to is someone like Joe insinuating that if it wasn't for the yanks we would have thrown the towel in in WW2. We MAY have lost had things worked out differently, but we wouldn't have lain down like a certain country not a million miles away from the UK!
cstrife16, its not called the bpl. its called the epl. so much for knowing about football
Despite the roster exemption for international players, the Galaxy were cash strapped paying both Donovan and Beckham. They had little talent elsewhere on the field. Gullitt was brought in by Beckham in the hopes that he could professionalize the team, but clearly they were so far down the toilet that he quickly quit. Becks saw the writing on the wall and started carving his way out. That's just smart business. What would you do if you took a raise to go to a company that your friends told you was squat, but that you felt had a lot of promise and it turned out you were wrong. You'd be looking for a way out just like Becks. Nobody likes to work for a lousy company no matter how much they pay you. Hats off to Becks. Credit to Donovan. He's busted his @$$ trying to make the Galaxy better. If he worked hard in Germany, he'd be a superstar. Maybe it is time for him to give it another go.
""the only sport other than Cricket that is popular in Europe that you guys are good at.""
Joe you're getting delusional now!! The cricket team is a joke!
