David Beckham has come under a blistering attack from Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan just ahead of his return to the MLS team.
In a new book due out later this month, Donovan claims Beckham has demonstrated little commitment to the Galaxy cause and been a negative influence on the team since the ousting of former coach Ruud Gullit.
"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us," Donovan says in 'The Beckham Experiment', authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl. "As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways - on the field, off the field."
He continued: "Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone's paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard."
Donovan, who is the United States captain and wears the Galaxy armband in Beckham's absence, also questioned the former England skipper's leadership abilities, claiming he is too often silent in team meetings.
"Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain," he said. "Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn't happened. And I don't think that's too much for us to expect. Especially when he's brought all this on us."
Beckham's first season in MLS was a largely miserable experience as an unbalanced Galaxy team struggled all year and missed out on the play-offs, with Gullit quitting before the end of the campaign.
Gullit's departure, which came a little over a month after Beckham's Galaxy debut, is the moment Donovan believes the light went out for the club's marquee player.
"When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing," Donovan said. "He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.
"Somewhere along the way - and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go - he just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-huh, I'm not doing it anymore'."

Your right lampshade, playing football doesn't make me an expert. But living in Europe doesn't make you an expert either so stop saying people outside of Europe don't get it. It is @#$%. It's like saying everyone that lives in San Fransisco is gay. Just because its all around you doesn't mean its is who you are.
I WAD SHEG BACKHAM.
ALREET JIMBO DE YE WANT TA WEE SHEG?
Lets all stop talking politics and get back to the real world as you Brits and Yanks are all the same at the end of the day.
Football Matters-
Yes Beckham is not committed to the cause because he has the oppurtunity to play at the top level again.
Yes Landon Donovan played better and was more committed because he is the star of the MLS.
Beckham is a fully committed professional who wants to represent his country so he trys by playing the off season in a european league to prove he's still good enough and anyone who says he's not is obviously a typical support one club and know nothing about other things in the football world going on except by reading the Sun or Daily Star that has big pictures.
Beckham should see out this season in the MLS and then sign for AC Milan if they are still interested or Chelsea now as Ancelotti has been appointted manager.
Look who’s talking. US fans recognize the skill level that Europeans have in soccer. We do nothing but compliment it and admit that it is at a higher level in Europe than in the US. But the only thing you guys can do is thrash US soccer. Instead of helping us in supporting Soccer in the US to try and raise the level out here, you Euro Scum just bash it like the jealous haters that you are because it is the only sport other than Cricket that is popular in Europe that you guys are good at. And for all of you haters out there the level of US Soccer is on the rise just ask Spain.
Playing football doesn't make you an expert! It's a bit like saying that you're a gourmet chef because you eat food!!
By the way I will not associate myself with Joe and his ridiculous ranting. He clearly is a bit delusional about his history.
Why is it that just because we were American's we know nothing about football. I am from Ohio, a huge fan of the MLS but a bigger BPL fan. I have played football and only football since I was a kid and keep track of all the European leagues. How dare you say that just because we are not from Europe we know nothing about football.
As for Beckham's sorry @#$%. He got paid a hell of a lot to come over and get people interested in the game. He did that, and said he was committed to it, but suddenly last year it no longer interested and he decided to give up. I watched him game after game dog it out on the pitch. Landon has every right to be upset. He had to give up his armband for a guy who doesn't give a @#$% what his team does. Beckham only cares about himself and his own interests.
if beckham sucks so much how did he get a game for AC milan? score goals for milan and get back in the england team? your league just isnt good enough for the likes of beckham. a few greats have tried to play in your league from pele, Youri Djorkaeff, Hristo Stoichkov and all failed. you even had stupid rules such as penalty shoot outs to resolve a draw?????? stick to playin soft ball. beckham is a footballing god and you should all kiss his @#$%!
How do you work out that Germany are going to win the next World Cup! I thought the USA was going to do that!!!
Amazing that Beckham has been let anywhere near the England team still if Capello keeps playing Beckham Germany will be assured of another World Cup next year :-)
Joe
Scum like you would have been across the border to Canada at the first sign of trouble!
If you check your history, not the Hollywood version, you'll see that Britain never quit! Neither did most of the others in Europe who were fighting long before the US became involved. The US would have sat out the war if the Japanese hadn't invaded Pearl Harbour - one of your wonderful "heroes" Charles Lindburgh actively campaigned against US involvement up to this point. Don't tar everyone with the same brush!
joe how can you say that when the yanks came over late strutting there stuff thinking there gods gift wahey great help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting to see how the yanks are suddenly experts on everything to do with football having won a couple of games! The sooner Beckham gets out of the States the better! They can then sink back to the level of obscurity that they deserve, and go back to the "stat" games they seem to enjoy. Under their system, a player can work his socks off during a game and get no recognition if there are no "assists" or goals against his name. American games are built on statistics, If there aren't any they can't appreciate a game! In a couple of years they'll be claiming that they invented the game! The same mentality they apply to those Hollywood films where they "won" battles they never actually participated in!!
The whole point of Beckham coming to the MLS was to raise the level and the quality of play in the US. How is giving a half @$$ effort for the one season that he played doing that. I guess quitting has always been the European way. Remember World War II, Your Welcome!!!
I don't understand how anyone could possibly back Beckham here. He and his mgmt people demanded that he be made team Captain before he ever stepped foot on the pitch, or even training grounds, for the Galaxy. Then when he does get it he doesn't act like a Captain in the least. A Captain doesn't put in the bare minimum effort, miss training sessions, and have zero interaction with the team. A Captain travels with and supports the team even when he's injured, not sit at home and offer zero support when the team needs it most. Don't just read this slanted mini excerpt which was obviously only intended to try and stir up comments here and turn it into England vs America or some such... read the entire excerpt over at SI. Beckham thought he was bigger than the club, hmmmm, where have we heard that before. I guess Sir Alex was wrong and should shut up too, Beckham can do no wrong according to this lot! The money thing is what it is... Donovan doesn't care about that, he's got plenty of money. It's the other kids in the MLS who make about £10,000/year that were hurt the most by all that... enough of the blind loyalty. Becks was a prima donna from the start, and when the going got tough, well... Davey got going alright - on a plane to Milan. I applaud Donovan for his honesty, everyone else kisses Beckham's rear, why should he when Beckham obviously doesn't care about him nor his team? Lando bit his tongue for 2 years, now it's time for Becks to face the music before he tucks tail again and runs out forever. And good riddance when he does and this is all finally over for good.
Donovan is just whining his 5ft @#$% off because he actually thought the USA could beat Brazil, and is unhappy at the result. In typical American fashion he's going to have a face of barely contained tears for a few weeks then he'll turn it into some very extroverted resolution to do better in the future. Dempsey and Donovan were just @#$% sports and poor losers, and are prime examples as to why american teams will never dominate in world team sports. Even in basketball they usually get knocked out of the olympics by countries like lithuania.
If Beckham isn't playing for or caring about the team then it could only conceivably be because the quality of players in the USA is lower than those on youth teams in europe. If anything, Donovan should be saying "I know we're all useless, but he is being paid so he should put up with our inability to play football well."
Beckham should leave the country saying something like "the US will never be great at football" - that's the best thing that could happen, because it would lead to a national rivalry and 50 years from now the states will get into the WC semi finals and will shout: "What NOW, Beckham?"
same old yank think they know it all and are the best and when they dont like it or proved wrong they just knock them or ( blow them up )
Donovan obviously needs to sell books and has jumped on the back of one of the best players the world has ever seen.
Let’s just look at the stats between Beckham and Donovan for the 2008 season.
Beckham: 10 assists and 7 goals. Donavan: 9 assists and 20 GOALS!!!!!!!! Now if you Britt’s would have paid attention to last season you would have seen how much Donovan busted his butt for galaxy while our great English Captain did nothing except stand around collecting a pay check and looking good for all of the 13 year old teeny boppers that showed up to the games. If Beckham wants to come back to the MLS and give it another try and actually put some effort into it then fine. But if he plans on giving us the same lack lusting effort that he gave last year then you keep can keep your garbage in Europe. GO DONOVAN!!!!!!!!!!
