Premier League - Robinson seals Bolton switch

Eurosport - Sun, 12 Jul 10:28:00 2009

Bolton finally secured the signing of West Brom defender Paul Robinson after the clubs agreed a loan deal.

FOOTBALL Paul Robinson, who joined Bolton from West Brom on loan - 0

The two clubs had been at odds for weeks over the valuation of the 30-year-old left-back.

West Brom were believed to be holding out for £1 million while Bolton were only prepared to offer half that amount but the player has now joined Wanderers on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Just 12 months ago Robinson signed a new two-year deal with the Baggies but after their relegation from the Premier League he feels now is the time to make a move to remain in the top flight.

And the decision to join Bolton was made easy by the fact he had worked under manager Gary Megson previously at The Hawthorns.

"I am delighted that we've managed to get him in. He's got a great deal of Premier League experience and is the type of player Wanderers supporters will like," said the Bolton boss.

"He has a wholehearted approach to the game, is desperate to win and will be good in the dressing room."

  1. one more thing about this signing is it really shows up the paucity of imagination that our old mate gazza megson has. It also illustrates the scarcityof strikers. Bolton really struggled last year because they found it difficult to score. So Gazza buys a m idfielder and loans out a past his best defender. Anyone still calling for his return?

  2. Ok Once again for Drews benefit.

What have the following players got in common: -

    Phil Neville
    Jaap Stam
    Paul Ince
    Roy Keane
    Ruud Van Nistelrooy

    Got in Common?

THEY HAVE ALL SIGNED FOR OTHER TEAMS BUT HAVE STILL HAD PART OF THEIR WAGES SUBSIDISED BY THE SELLING CLUB.

We have Luke Moore who has 30% of his wages subsidised by Villa for Gods Sake!

Paul Robinson had a 25% selling clause included as well as a minimum release clause. IF we had sold him for £500,000 we would have only gained 75% of the fee, therefore we turned down the half a million as the money left was rubbish. Instead we have agreed to loan him for a season with a GUARANTEED purchase price of 2Million.

So once again all you haters who turned on peace have had to swallow your words, he has once again got a fantastic price for a 30 year old left back who wasn't good enough. And I told you this 24 hours before it was released into the press!

Lets see whether you are as quick to come back on and admit how wrong you were.

Oh and Alan, I'm sorry if my little maths sums scare you, however I never praised Paul Robinson's qualities as a player, that mouth and fingers of yours working a little quicker than that brain?

  3. Adding to Paul Chappel's assessment, as a loan for the next season he only costs us £5k a week, not the £20k for last year - or the £30k he wasn holding out for. The £30k breaks the JP threshold, so how many would come forward for more??
Exceptions should be based on QUALITY - Paul R failed the quality test last season.

  5. it seems like we have got ourselves a mathematicion i wonder if he counted all the goals braindead robinson gave away last season he (robinson) will fit in at bolton only he wondered around the pitch every game last term pity he did not end up with that muppey mowbray our loyal ex leader

  6. wish i could remember his name but its gone.
the bolton left back, the dreadlocked one, Ricardo Gardner?
Much better player than Robbo - so he's going oop north to keep the bench warm and paint the dressing room is he?
Never mind. He had his good years at the baggies but last year - phew - last year!!!!!! A defensive liability (most of them were though), a disciplinary liability, and didn't really show much coming forward. There was a lot of frustration from MArek Cech and the fans understood that.
The move will be better for us than it will bolton or robbo

  7. u sure u right mr paul know it all chappell ? as usually players who go out on loan means the parent club STILL have to pay 'part' of his wages NOT when you sell them on, that finishes as the new club pays ALL his wages ? i think you trying to blind people with science and its NOT right, Robbo would get the Signing on fee FROM Bolton not WBA, it was HE who wanted to leave not the other way around, it is perhaps some sort of tax fiddle for either or both clubs, and if his fitness fails, then what ??? he returns AGAIN to the PARENT Club !

  8. Ok lets explain it to you all:

Paul Robinson has 12 months remaining on his current contract (With a further years option in the clubs favour)

By selling Mr Robinson we would have had to pay him and his agent 25% of any fee gained and would have been liable for 25% of his wages. If we had sold him to Bolton (For £500,000) we would have received £375,000. We would also have been liable for around £5000 a week for the next 52 weeks (He has been offered around £30,000 a week @ Bolton).

    £5000 x 52 = £250,000.

This would have meant we would have made a profit of £125,000 on the player!!

By loaning him out we are no longer liable for any of his wages (£20,000 x 52 = £1,000,000) or have to pay any transfer fee to his agent. If after 12 months he has been successful they will simply renew his contract for another year and then say to Robinson, If you want to leave you have to give up your 25%, at the age of 31 and having been away from the hawthorns for 12 months do you think he's really going to come back? Even more so if we don't get promoted!

What Peace has done is brilliant, not only has he got ridden of one of out top earners, he has done so at no loss to the albion and safe in the knowledge that in 12 months we will be in an even stronger bargaining position.

  11. thank god he gone.
Has not played well for two years, held marek cech back, and his comments are a joke.
Wants to play for Celtic!!! the best he can do is a manager who signed him six years ago.
    Good riddance

  13. Totally agree with you Bob. Should have moved him on and got the cash. Its not like we paid millions for him
to begin with. I fail to see how this loan benefits WBA. Bolton and Robinson do very well out of it.

From Anthony, on Sun 12 Jul 2:17PM
  14. Robinson is in a win/win situation beause if the baggies get promoted next season, he will more than likely still end up in the premier league. As for the comments saying he wanted to leave,i would just have sold him and move on. He obviously does'nt want to play for the baggies anymore so why loan him out. We dont want anymore retards from Bolton Meite was bad enough.

From BOB S, on Sun 12 Jul 1:27PM
  15. Still can't see it. The player wanted to leave, couldn't play for WBA again after comments in the press.
Should have sold him outright, he is not wanted back and he won't play for The Baggies again.

From Anthony, on Sun 12 Jul 1:15PM
  16. Because if its a season long loan and you're promoted it gives you options.

  18. Whats the point of a loan deal ? Can't see any sense in this. He cost us next to nothing from Watford. Why not
just take the money offered ? Very odd.
