Manchester United's fit-again club captain Gary Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson's squad will face a different kind of pressure this season. The Red Devils finished last term as champions of Europe after following up their Premier League title success with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in the Champions League final.
With the likes of the Blues, Liverpool and Arsenal snapping at United's heels to claim Premier League glory Neville believes maintaining their consistency will be their toughest challenge this season.
"It's a different type of challenge for us. We can't say we don't have the experience," he told Sky Sports News speaking at the launch of the Premier League's new respect campaign.
"We've got a good level of experience and maturity in the team. Maintaining that and performing consistently is the goal.
"We can win more. We can improve. There are always things we can improve on. That's the challenge. We can stretch our lead at the top, but the main thing is being in contention going into the final two months.
"There was such a close gap between us and Chelsea last season. It's a little bit of luck and we know it's going to be difficult this season to win the league."
Neville missed virtually the whole of last season through injury, but after featuring in last weekend's Community Shield success over Portsmouth the veteran defender is hoping his fitness worries are firmly behind him.
"You do have moments when you fear for your career when you're picking up niggling injuries that I did at the end of last season," he continued. "I just hope this season I can stay fit and contribute.
"Hopefully now I'm over those. I was fit for the last couple of months of last season, but the way the team were playing it was impossible for me to get back to the level they were at."
