Smith Upset At Cuellar Exit

Tue 12 Aug, 09:09 AM

Walter Smith is 'disappointed' Carlos Cuellar is leaving Rangers, but plans to reinvest the money in his team.

Cuellar is discusing a move to Aston Villa after the Premier League club triggered a 10million euros (£7.8million) release clause in his contract.

The Spanish defender, who had also been linked with Newcastle United, impressed during his debut campaign at Ibrox after arriving last summer.

However, following Rangers' shock elimination from the UEFA Champions League last week, Cuellar was tipped to leave the club.

Though Gers boss Smith is upset by the centre-half's decision to move on, he is eager to use the money from Cuellar's sale to improve his squad.

"This has come as a surprise and I am disappointed," Smith told the club's official website.

"Carlos Cuellar has been a great player for the football club and inevitably there has been speculation about him playing in the Premiership.

"The club has received a substantial uplift in fee and we will now reinvest in the team."

  1. lets say goodbye to owd moneybags murray and his muppet lacky bain, and hope somebody who has a big wallet and a passion for rangers will come and buy the best club in the world. and we can go on and win the spl from the nasty and show them we are simply the best

  4. we should now go out and invest in sean maloney, he can play wide and midfield which is what we need. this type of cash recieved for a player who has not had a full season with the team ( albeit a really good player ) is too good to let go. why dont we play hamdani, he can pass the ball and can put his foot on it when need be. disappointed in Thompson however, he could have made a name for himself but has failed big time to impress in Barry's absence.

  9. one question... the money generated from last seasons champ league and a run to the Eufa cup final, coupled with the sale of hutton and now cuellar (2 players for about £17m) yet still no serious investment in the team... a team that has no heart and players who are no where near good enough to wear the jersey... but one of last seasons best players in Davis could slip through the net due to penny pinching by the so called people who have the interests of the club at heart.
Rangers have the best striker seen in scotland for years in Kris Boyd... but wont play him due to alleged non work out side the box.. and heres me thinkin a striker ply'd his trade in the box.. any how.. the question is... do ya not think its time to step aside Walter?? let someone who has got the bottle to attack teams in europe come in and show you how its done. playing a 4-1-4-1 against a team like Kaunas was askin to get beaten... i have said since Walters return that it will be a step backwards in europe... and this season i was proven right... against Kaunas.. the entire team Bottled it but what do ya expect if the management are bottling it by playin a @#$% formation.
did Walter expect to repeat last seasons dismal performances in europe and get away with it?? it appears he did... but then all the teams who watched rangers last season now know that score 2 against us and they will beat us.
i know we should be backing the team... and your probably right... but why wait til Celtic beat us in the first old firm game to call for Walter to go.. he should go now (and take half of the shower of dumplins that he has bought with him).

i for one will not be backing this team this year... regardless of what they do.. why should the fans show some heart when the club (from top to bottom) does not show any in return.

  13. And there was me thinking Aston Villa weren't playing Champions League football this year...muppets. If he had played against Kaunas and was cup-tied he would've still signed for Aston Villa. It was Cuellar's decision to invoke the get-out clause in his contract. If he wants to play for a team of also-rans in the Premiership then good luck to him. I would much rather have the dosh to spend on strengthening the midfield anyway. We should just stump up the £4m for Davis now and get a winger in before the window closes at the end of the month or else we will be in trouble this year.
