Carling Cup - Blades head first round upsets

Eurosport - Wed, 12 Aug 09:22:00 2009

Sheffield United, Derby County and Plymouth Argyle were all high-profile victims in the first round of the Carling Cup, but QPR and Norwich were amongst a clutch of comprehensive winners.

Kevin Blackwell at Wembley, FOOTBALL - 0

Kevin Blackwell's Blades lost 2-1 to League Two Port Vale at Bramall Lane as Marc Richards scored either side of Billy Sharp's 33rd-minute strike to produce perhaps the shock of the night.

Derby, semi-finalists last season, were also on the receiving end of an unexpected defeat. The Rams took the lead through Gary Teale at the Don Valley Stadium before Paul Warne and Kevin Ellison ensured Rotherham claimed victory.

Plymouth were defeated 2-1 by Gillingham while fellow Championship sides Ipswich and Watford were taken to extra time, Roy Keane's side requiring penalties to defeat Shrewsbury and The Hornets beating Barnet 2-0.

Having lost 7-1 to Colchester in a terrible defeat at the weekend, Bryan Gunn's Norwich responded in style as a Grant Holt hat-trick helped them secure a 4-0 win at Yeovil.

Wayne Routledge also scored three times in QPR's emphatic 5-0 win at Exeter and Neil Harris claimed another hat-trick in a 4-0 win for Millwall over Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Notts County suffered their first defeat of the Sven Goran Eriksson era when losing 1-0 at home to Doncaster Rovers.

  8. And Mr Blackwell reckons that the Blades are stronger this season than last. Wake up and smell the coffee Kevin. You.ve sold the best players - as usual - and brought in some dross unknowns. It happened when you sold Beattie to Stoke and it cost United automatic promotion. Now you get what you deserve.
