Tim Paine has been named in Australia's 15-man one-day squad to face England next month, while Dirk Nannes has been picked in the Twenty20 squad despite representing Holland in the recent ICC World Twenty20.
Skipper Ricky Ponting will not only miss both Twenty20 games against England but also a one-day international against Scotland and the start of the one-day series as well, as selectors plan to bring him home for a rest after the final Ashes Test.
Responding to Australia's failure to advance from the opening round of the ICC World Twenty20 in June, selectors have left out Mike Hussey and Nathan Bracken from the Twenty20 squad.
Instead they have picked Adam Voges and 33-year-old Nannes, who has been the premier bowler in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash in the past couple of years, helping Victoria to their third successive title in 2007-08 and then to the decider again last summer.
But having regularly been overlooked for higher honours by Australian selectors a disillusioned Nannes instead opted to play for the Dutch.
Nannes can still also represent Australia though because Holland are an associate member of the ICC and do not have full membership rights, meaning he is also permitted to play for a full member nation such as Australia.
The ICC actively encourages full member nations such as Australia to release players like Nannes - if they are not going to select them - to associate members such as Holland, and the left-armer has finally been rewarded for his good form in recent summers.
"In this instance we have selected Dirk Nannes following his strong domestic performances in recent seasons to have a look at him in the Australian set up," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
