The 19-year-old has made 14 appearances for United, scoring five goals and picking up a Carling Cup medal in the process.

Welbeck ended the last campaign on loan at Preston where he scored twice in eight appearances.

The striker will be available for the Black Cats' season-opener against Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce now has four senior strikers within his ranks - Darren Bent, Fraizer Campbell, Martyn Waghorn and Welbeck.

And with Sunderland confirming the sale of Kenwyne Jones to Stoke for £8million, Welbeck could get the chance to establish himself alongside Bent.

Welbeck has come through the ranks at Old Trafford and manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to send him out on loan to gain more first-team experience.
