Cagliari have denied talks have taken place with Liverpool over a move to Anfield for midfielder Pasquale Foggia.

Reports had suggested the Premier League club were interested in securing the services of the talented 24-year-old, but the Sardinians were quick to dismiss the speculation.

A club statement read: "Cagliari Calcio denies any negotiation with English club Liverpool for Pasquale Foggia. The reports of a possible transfer are pure speculation from the English tabloids.

"Foggia is beginning his journey as a football player and has to continue on the path he has already undertaken."

Following a spell with Reggina last season, Foggia joined the Rossoblu on loan from Lazio in the summer and has been an instant success at the Stadio Sant'Ella, scoring three times in two games.

His form has earned the former Italy Under-21 international a call-up to the full Azzurri squad, but his new club know with the increased exposure comes added distractions.

"The call-up to the Italy squad is an honour for our club and has to represent extra motivation for him. Rumours of this type only distract a player from his objectives," the statement added.
