Premier League - Rampant Sunderland maul Hull

Eurosport - Sat, 12 Sep 22:59:00 2009

Darren Bent scored twice as Sunderland beat Hull 4-1 at the Stadium of Light to climb to sixth in the Premier League.

2009-2010 Sunderland Darren Bent - 0

Bent put Steve Bruce's side ahead from the penalty spot early on, before Kamil Zayette headed an equaliser on the brink of half-time.

Andy Reid made it 2-1 to Sunderland shortly after the break, and after Bent added a second just after the hour mark, Zayette headed into his own net to complete the rout.

On a sun-kissed afternoon in the north east, Sunderland dominated from the whistle and deservedly went ahead on 13 minutes.

Reid, deployed on the left of midfield in front of Keiran Richardson, swung over a cross from the left and Craig Fagan inexplicably swung an arm at it to concede a needless penalty.

Bent stepped up and drove a low shot past the right hand of Boaz Myhill to put the home side ahead.

Hull responded well, however, and slowly came into the match as the half progressed.

Phil Brown's side equalised on 43 minutes when Zayette met Kamel Ghilas's left-wing corner at the near post to head home from close range.

But Sunderland emerged for the second half like a side possessed. After Hull failed to clear a cross on 48 minutes, Reid ran onto the loose ball and drove a shot across Myhill and into the bottom corner from 10 yards.

Bent then grabbed his second of the afternoon, poking home from close range on 66 minutes after more lax defending in the Hull penalty area.

It was the striker's fourth goal in five Premier League matches this season - form that can only enhance his credentials as a possible member of England's World Cup squad in South Africa next year.

Ten minutes later the home side made it 4-1 when Zayette directed a header past his own goalkeeper after a cross from Reid. Hull were dead and buried.

Brown's visitors had been soundly beaten and could have a long season ahead on the basis of this poor defensive showing.

As for Bruce and Sunderland, optimism will be through the roof at the Stadium of Light after a resounding win made it three wins from five and sent the Black Cats soaring into European qualification territory.
