Ameobi out of Bluebirds clash

Sat, 12 Sep 13:29:17 2009

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi will be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing surgery on a foot problem.

The 27-year-old limped off during the 4-3 Carling Cup victory over Huddersfield on August 26 and has been out of action since with what has been described as a "stress injury".

Strike-partner Andy Carroll will also miss Sunday's Coca-Cola trip to Cardiff with a groin strain, once again leaving teenager Nile Ranger as caretaker boss Chris Hughton's only fit frontman.

Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring) is also still out, while deadline day signing Peter Lovenkrands is short of match fitness.

But midfielder Nicky Butt is available after suffering a slight ankle injury on his return to action from a dislocated thumb, while Fabricio Coloccini will be assessed after his late return from international duty with Argentina.

  2. I know what you mean Sean, It's very frustrating. Both Shola and Carroll are big lads yet neither fit. You can't help but get the feeling that our strikers appear to have been strangely cursed. Same as the old brigade, Martins,Viduka,Owen..Makes you wonder what Shearer used to do that was so different. If he really wants a job at NUFC maybe he can concentrate on getting our strikers fitter and stonger.. leave the management stuff to the Hughton and Calderwood.

  3. This is nearly always the problem with Shola. Even when he does hit form, he ends up in the physio's room for long periods of time. Other than Shearer ( apart from potentially career ending injuries ) this seams to be the common scenario with Newcastle strikers. Why can't we ever seem to find the robust kind of striker we need, who can score goals, and take the knocks without walking out of the stadium on crutches?

We'll just have to pack out the midfield and look to alternate in support of Nile ( young blood ) Ranger. We might get something from a set piece - who knows. We've still got enough class to get something out of the game at this level. VIVA LA TOON MOI CAMPANEROS. VIVA LA TOON. MUERTE PARA LOS PENDEJOS MAKEMOS

  4. Shame as he's just picked up the player of the month! Well looks like Nile's gonna have to do the job then.. unless of course Smudger can break his duck.
