After participating in six Intercontinental Rally Challenge rounds this year and with one event to go before closing the season, the MEM Proton operation recently confirmed that Guy Wilks had decided to leave the team.
Development work on the new Satria Neo S2000 went well, with double British Rally Champion Wilks even reaching fourth position overall at the conclusion of Rally Russia last July.
However MEM Proton team boss Chris Mellors indicated last week that differences of opinion led to Wilks leaving the Proton development programme, with Alister McCrae being nominated to take over the Malaysian manufacturer's car at next month's IRC season finale in Scotland.
Wilks has now revealed that, following a long discussion with co-driver Phil Pugh, he requested "to be released from the team with immediate effect" last Thursday.
"Chris Mellors had just returned from Malaysia but he couldn't give me any reassurances for 2010 regarding budget and development," Wilks explained. "And the team needs both to unlock the full potential of the Proton.
"The IRC is a great championship with great cars and Phil and I are determined to be back as soon as possible," he pointed out. "We wish Chris and the team all the best for the future."

Got no time for Wilks, hes just a cry baby and when he started to slag people off ( Mark Higgins ) publicly he lost all respect I ever had for him, he will just have to go and get a proper job like the rest of us.!!
Wilks is not a diplomat and if he didnt like something he would hum and ha about it - obviously the Proton is anyway a @#$% car to begin with and needed a huge amount to get it in with a shout which wasnt happening and Chris said so and got into a heated arguement rather than debate and ended sadly.
