Premier League - Paper Round: Spurs eye James

Eurosport - Mon, 12 Oct 08:45:00 2009

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is set to once again raid former club Portsmouth, this time for goalkeeper David James.

The Sun reports that Spurs are lining up a £1m bid for the 39-year-old, who would join former Pompey team-mates Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar at White Hart Lane. That fee may be reduced if Carlo Cudicini agrees to move in the opposite direction.

There has been a lot of movement between the two clubs in recent years, with Kevin Prince Boateng the most recent player to move from north London to Hampshire, a path trodden by Younes Kaboul, Pedro Mendes, Sean Davis and Noe Pamarot over the past few seasons.

Spurs travel to Fratton Park this weekend, a fixture which last season saw several Spurs fans charged for abusing former skipper Sol Campbell.

Campbell left Portsmouth in the summer as a free agent before making his ill-fated move to Notts County, which lasted just one match. Now the former England defender is seeking special dispensation from the Football League to allow him to join a Championship club until January, when he hopes to make a return to the Premier League, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 35-year-old has already held talks with West Brom, and Hull City are keen to take him on once he has proved his match fitness.

Campbell's erstwhile director of football at Meadow Lane, Sven-Goran Eriksson, has denied to The Guardian that there is any truth in the rumours that he will be the next high-profile departure from the League Two club.

"I'm here," Eriksson said. "I'm staying, of course."

A local journalist added: "This club is currently beset by more rumour-mongering than I've ever known in football... It seems very much as though someone is bearing a grudge."

The FA is waiting for a written explanation from Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson regarding his comments about referee Alan Wiley's fitness after the 2-2 draw with Sunderland at the start of the month.

Ferguson issued an apology for his comments, but the chief of referee's agency Prospect is not impressed.

Alan Leighton said: "What Sir Alex appears to be trying to do is say he has apologised and therefore that should be the end of the matter. But what he has done is crank it up. We hope there is a meaningful punishment."

Carson Yeung has sent two aides to Birmingham City ahead of his own arrival on Wednesday, when he will have talks with manager Alex McLeish about their future relationship.

Yeung, whose takeover at St Andrews means that half of the clubs in the Premier League are now under foreign ownership, has already moved to assure the former Scotland boss that his position is safe, and ex-co-owner David Sullivan has revealed to the Mirror that McLeish could have between £10m and £15m to spend in the January transfer window.

  10. Do Spurs really need James. Why pay 1 million if its true what the papers say.
We should forget James and fork out more money and get a goalkeeper who is not over the hill.
I also agree with what tmattocks says (comment 10), get a recognized goalkeeper.I guess James wants another shot at the world cup and Spurs seem the only club foolish enough to give him the chance, no other club is or has shown interest in him

  11. My question is - did Harry actually say this, or is it just another slow media day for football so lets rake up one of the old chestnuts reports? England lost a game - James came into goal to replace an idiot - what better mouldy chestnut than link him with Spurs.

  19. Why not give the one million pounds to a worthwhile charity, David James is over the Hill, the reason he wants to come to Spurs is to keep his England Place, Daniel Levy could do England a favour by blocking James Transfer, yes I agree we need a better goalkeeper, so why not spend a bit more and get a recognised keeper. If James was that good why is no other club after him.

From tmattocks, on Mon 12 Oct 11:19AM
  20. WHY? He didn't get the nickname "Calamity James" for nothing!
