Serie A - Cannavaro cleared of doping

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has been cleared of doping after failing a drugs test due to treatment for an insect sting.

"(The Italian Olympic Committee's) anti-doping tribunal) has dropped proceedings against Fabio Cannavaro, considering well-founded the prosecutor's request for them to be dropped," CONI said.

The Juventus defender received emergency cortisone treatment for a sting on August 28 and failed a dope test after a Serie A match two days later.

The 36-year-old had requested an exemption for the medication but did not receive it before he was tested because of a mix-up over the documentation.

Cannavaro said his club had messed up with the exemption request but blasted the media for their handling of the story.

"I'm furious," Cannavaro said at the training centre near Florence where Italy are preparing for their final 2010 World Cup qualifier against Cyprus. "My conscience is clean.

"You get stung by a bee and then you find yourself in the newspaper as if you had been doping. Some newspapers and television channels went too far.

"It's the second time in my life that I've found myself gratuitously in the newspapers for a story like this.

"I hope this story does not follow me beyond today. My career has always been distinguished by respect for the rules."

Cannavaro was famously videoed inserting a drip into his arm on the eve of a 3-0 victory over Marseille in the 1999 UEFA Cup final when playing for Parma.

His lawyer confirmed the drip contained Neoton, a drug used in cardiac surgery to protect the heart, and was not on the WADA list of banned substances.

The defender is expected to return for Italy against Cyprus in Parma on Wednesday.

He missed Saturday's 2-2 draw with Republic of Ireland in Dublin, which secured the world champions' place in South Africa, through suspension.

  1. This show inexperience of FIFA govering body. Drastic­ step should taken against any untrue­ accused.definitely. But somehow i believe this is not­ the first time in football history a player get sting­ and cure with medicine and got fine. How come it cound­ happen easiy without trace? I believe some may wants to­ cover the story for some world class player, maybe­ Cannavaro was guilty..... just maybe...(some conspiracy­ maybe)

  3. Some poele just wanna see blood. no matter what they­ read and what they get explained, they just want to see­ blood and accuse others. Cannavaro case was so­ evidently clear that even the national selector said it­ was a closed case before even CONI gives its verdict.­ Everyone was confortable that the player did get stung­ by a bee, did have a bad reaction, and did ask for­ examption of control test after that. Any half-fair­ court in the world would dismiss the case quickly.

  4. no.1 is right. There was never any doubt in the minds­ of sane people. It's a case of mis-filing,­ that's all. Cannavaro is a great player who got a­ bee-sting, that's all. I'm sure the papers and­ other media will find something else bad to say about­ Italy at some other point, but at least for the moment,­ they can shut up about this
