A leading figure at F1's governing body suspects the incoming radical aerodynamic changes in 2009 will not increase overtaking.
Tony Purnell, the former Jaguar team boss who is now the FIA's technical consultant, said he doubts the rule changes will achieve their target of reducing downforce by half.
"The F1 jungle drums tell me the cars are going to have much more downforce than (that)," he told Racecar Engineering Magazine.
On the advice of the Technical Working Group, comprised of F1 teams' leading technical minds, the FIA ratified drastic changes to the aerodynamic rules for 2009.
But Purnell suspects that, rather than 50 percent, the rules will only cut downforce by 20 or 30 percent.
"I suspect that may mean the aero rules do little for racing," he said, warning that if that is so, the FIA will act again.
Purnell said: "If it needs a re-think, then it needs a re-think."

sorry people but ijust ove the sticky out bits here an there make the cars look different and exciting
The new radical aerodynamic changes in 2009 will keep on changing, until Ferrari, finds the ones the work of them, and I suspect, just before the season starts.
superjohn,
Good suggestions. It shows you have a working knowledge of downforce and suspension. I can only suggest leaving out the traction control to save costs.
Cyrano, My friend watch the blood pressure & the old ticker.
So now I write a piece of trash, and THAT you accept. What the He*l is wrong with you?
The editor equipment on these comments should f**k right off. I wrote a clean, neat, well worded comment with no profanity, and it was not valid. You're a bunch of p*i*ks!
Yeah Just have the car, no boy racer bits.
Ditch the wings altogether and incorporate all the aerodynamics into the body shell design, without all those sticky out bits, still retaining open wheels. I'd love to see what those ingenious engineers come up with.
Typical can't get f**k all right.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Get rid of the wings!! Have open wheel cars with active suspension, slicks, maybe even traction control, but NO WINGS. Regulate total downforce to be no more than 75% of the car weight and let's go racing.
