Championship - Barnsley may sue; Hume recovers

Eurosport - Wed, 12 Nov 13:19:00 2008

Barnsley are considering legal action over the incident that saw Iain Hume put into intensive care with a fractured skull during the derby match against Sheffield United.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Championship Barnsley Iain Hume - 0

Reds manager Simon Davey said that the club could take measures after seeing former Barnsley skipper Chris Morgan elbow striker Hume in the 2-1 defeat at Oakwell - and said the Canadian had been moved from a high dependency unit to a Manchester hospital ward.

"The club may be seeking legal advice on the matter," he told BBC radio. "We've ended up with a life-threatening injury and a player in a hospital bed."

He told the South Yorkshire club's website: "I went to see Iain yesterday (Monday) evening and he is conscious, although he has not slept since the incident and he is not the most talkative.

"He is out of the high dependency unit now and they have moved him on to a hospital ward, which is good news, although he has tubes sticking out of his head.

"The operation went well, but he is very down and very angry. He has a scar that runs from his forehead in the shape of a horseshoe right round to his ear. He is black and blue, his head is swollen and he is a mess."

Hume, 25, was stood waiting to challenge for an aerial ball with Morgan and went to ground clutching his face, in full view of referee Andy D'Urso - but the Blades defender was only shown a yellow card.

"He got caught in the face with an elbow. The decision not to show a red card was an absolute disgrace," Davey, who was later sent to the stands for his protestations over a late penalty awarded to United, said.

"Iain is now in hospital with a fractured skull because of that challenge - one that seemingly warranted only a yellow card."

Davey and his assistant Ryan Kidd confronted D'Urso at half-time.

Sheffield United released a statement concerning Hume's condition.

"Sheffield United are saddened and concerned to hear that Barnsley striker Iain Hume is being monitored in a high dependency unit following last Saturday's fixture. We wish him a speedy and full recovery."

  1. i am a united fan and i agree if it was intentional than he wants banning for at least six matches it is no differant to what joey barton did to his own team-mate.i am a big chris morgan fan but if this is the way he now has to play then its time to get rid evan though he is the captain.please remember this is from a sheff utd fan of 43 years standing i have evev wrote to the clu as well

  2. Things need to calm down as in in the south yorkshire a very small minority of barnsley fans have threatened that BBC Radio sheffield would need a police guard at oakwell the next time they did commentary there for not condeming chris morgan enough

  3. United as a club should fine and ban Morgan
otherwise in a sense they are
    condoning Morgans actions
and inviting him to do it again!

  4. We need to stop the ELBOW being used in football, its a disgrace to the game, Why does the so called "administrators"allow it to happen.
I meam come on someone needs to stand up here, this is the first really bad injury from an elbow,[IT WONT BE THE LAST].
tHE :POWERS THA BE NEED TO TAKE A STAND]NOW.

  5. Morgan knew exactly what he was going to do cos he had a look at Hume as he was about to challenge for the ball.Speaking as a united fan Morgan should get a big fine, bigger ban and then move on cos he's just a clogger anyway.Hope Hume recovers to play again.

  7. The Player does need to have a lengthy Ban but court will not solve anything it will just make it worse in the future...After all it is about intent....But where would the line be drawn.......Should Arsenal have taken Birmingham to court about the Eduardo challenge?........He didn't do it on purpose but so what?........Things that happen on the field ahould stay on the field and be dealt with by the FA........Not by the Courts.

  8. The Sheff Utd player has a reputation for being a hard player, what he did was not hard, it was the action of a coward. Ian Hulme is a good hard working player who has the respect of the fans at whichever club he has played for. This foul on him was an attack by a far less skilful player to 'sort' him out. The Utd player should receive a lengthy ban by the F.A. All true football fans will be wishing Ian a swift & full recovery.

  9. i said yesterday these dirty cheating scumbag thugs want banning for life from the game and the police need to charge them with at least gbh with intent just the same as if they were on the streets thes so called proffesionals think they can get away with everything as soon as they put on a football shirt

  10. every1 please watch the incodent before commenting. iain is an honest player and has been since a young lad at my club tranmere. he was intentionaly taken out. discraceful smash to the head that was meant to hurt him jus not as much as it did. if di canio gets a lengthy ban for pushing a refeere years ago then morgan should get a lengthy ban. that was gbh.

  11. The issue of indemnity should not allow a professional footballer to assault another player on the pitch and get "punished" with a red or yellow card. Should our police wait outside clubs and issue cards to troublemakers?? You may argue that the issues are different but if you go clubbing the risk is you'll encounter drunk and disorderly people. Making an analogy with car racing is wrong. Risks playing football- possible injury. Risk from driving a car at close to 200mph....??? What would be your view if Hume died and didn't recover from the incident? Such "footballers" need to be removed from the game, if legal action gets this done then so be it.

  12. One word.

    'Disgraceful'.

Wouldn't it be highly ironic if a Sheff Utd player now gets sued over an on pitch incident?
The can of worms has already been opened, as far as taking legal action is concerned, by that idiot Kevin McCabe. Can't see there being much sympathy from anyone, not connected with the blades, if they now end up on the receiving end of the law suits!

  14. Mark E - lets look at it another way. Other than calling someone a moron, try to stop and think before opening your mouth. Rallying, which is a far more dangerous sport than kicking a piece of leather around - a driver or co driver is in an accident. Some even die. Others are badly injured (as in Japan not 10 days ago) and end up in expensive hospitals far from home.Does the driver or co driver sue the manufacturere or the local council? Of course not. Suing someone only makes bloody lawyers fat.

  15. Mark - sorry - I am NOT talking about the incident I am talking about the issue of going to court. The incident is up to the ref/club whatever. My fear is opening a can or worms if they sue the other player or the club. Ticket prices will double to cover the addeded indemnity costs - or are YOU on another planet

From not printable, on Tue 11 Nov 10:51AM
  16. Thh player involved should be dealt with by the police. And should receive what any other person causing these injuries to another would get. A prison sentance.

  17. not printable, what planet are you from??
Only a moron would make a comment such as if you "can't stand the heat get out the kitchen" to an incident in a football match that has put a man in an HDU. You obviously never played the game... do you know how much force it takes to fracture someones skull?
I've not seen the incident but I do play football, I'm a defender and I also know the history of Chris Morgan and his challenges. This is an incident that comes out of the realms of "is it a red or yellow card?". A man's life has been put at risk as well as his & his families livelihood.

From Mark, on Tue 11 Nov 10:44AM
  18. James - I didnt see the incident - but I did say if intentional its RED and that it - the point here though is the issue of going to court and sueing another team. Thats what the article is all about.

From not printable, on Tue 11 Nov 10:12AM
  19. A booking for an elbowing is a nonsense decision - if it's intentional it has to be red, if it's accidental then there should be no card at all, how does the ref justify a yellow card, under what criteria did he come to that decision? Then I saw the name D'urso and it all made sense.

    Get back soon Humey,

    From fazzy_uk, on Tue 11 Nov 9:38AM
  20. To non printable - I would've agreed with you until i saw the incident. The ball was in the air, but was certainly not an "arial ball", both players had their feet firmly on the ground. Morgan swung his elbow a good second or 2 before the ball reached the players and there's no doubt whatsoever that he intended catch the poor lad. He should be banned for at lease a few months
