Sergio Garcia won the rain-disrupted $5 million HSBC Champions after a play-off against Britain's Oliver Wilson in Shanghai to overtake Phil Mickelson as world number two.
The 28-year-old, who carded a final round four-under-par 68 to finish the tournament at 14-under alongside Wilson, slotted home a seven-foot birdie putt while his rival could only manage a par five on his third go at the 18th for the day.
"I'm just so proud to win and (become) number two in the world," said the Spaniard, who will pick up a cheque for $833,300. "I'm very happy,"
Garcia's eighth win on the European Tour - his second in three weeks after his Castello Masters victory - was technically the first of the 2009 season, which features a lucrative new season-ending championship in Dubai.
"It feels awesome to be the first winner on the Race to Dubai, I guess that will go down in history so it's always nice to do something like that," Garcia added.
He also won the Players Championship in a play-off this year.
Overnight leader Wilson, who hit a 70 in his final round, is still looking for his first victory on the European Tour after finishing second for the fifth time this year and the eighth time in his career.
"It's just getting to a stage where second is not good enough anymore," said the disappointed 28-year-old golfer.
"There was a time when I was pleased to be finishing there, and it's gone, and it's about time I took my chance."
Sweden's Peter Hanson, who had an eagle two in a final round of 66, shared third place on 13-under with Australia's former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, who finished with a 70.
Another Swede, Henrik Stenson, was fifth two shots further back after a 71, while South African Charl Schwartzel and Australian Adam Scott both shot 70s and shared sixth on 10-under.
Mickelson, last year's winner, carded a 73 to finish seventh and will cede the number two ranking behind Tiger Woods that he has held for one year and eight weeks since September 2007.
"That's not as big a concern right now," said the 38-year-old player, whose title defence effectively ended in the trees beside the 15th fairway.
"Having won this tournament last year, I know somewhat about the points where I was going to lose points if I didn't win. So I knew I needed to win to kind of hold on to that spot."
Garcia trailed Wilson by two shots after a bogey in fading light on the third hole of his fourth round on Sunday evening and he dropped another shot at the fifth on Monday morning.
A string of three birdies pushed him back to the top of the leaderboard, locked in a three-way battle with Wilson and Hanson.
He picked up another shot at the 14th but Wilson, playing in the group behind, matched him with a superb 20 foot birdie putt and moved back in front with an eight-footer at the 16th.
Garcia was not done yet, however, and forced the playoff with another birdie at the 18th, where he would then go on to claim the title on the second extra hole.
Players had returned to the course for a fifth day to complete the event after rain washed out all play on Friday and three hours of Saturday's action.
The event is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, the PGA Tour of Australasia, South Africa's Sunshine Tour and the China Golf Association.

Sergio is never in the same class as Tiger or Pardraig they've won majors. I can't see him winning any majors if he doesn't sort out his game espeically his putting part of the game.
Sorry Ray S, I think you are wrong. Garcia does not have the bottle to win majors. Harrington may not be flashy like Garcia but he has 3 majors. That is just 3 short of the great Faldo and more than Langer, woosis and Norman. Harrington doesn't care about world ranknigs he just wants majors. Garcia will win plenty mickey mouse tournaments but it's the majors that people remember. By the way I really like Garcia but you cannot say he's better than Harrington.
Not a bad life for a guy that God hates and thwarts at every turn. Just think if God liked him...President of a consortium of 10,000 gallaxies?
Poulter will hate me for saying this ( not that I consider Poulter in the same class at all but his own inflated ego suggests he is ), but I believe that Garcia is the only player in the world with the game to threaten Tiger's supremacy. Garcia is a magnificent striker of the ball but he needs to believe in himself a lot more and not get so despondent on the greens.
I suspect his mental attitude in the past has contributed to his inability to last the pace but he is changing and maturing, he seems to be more relaxed and gets less excited over anything adverse. I doubt that he fears Tiger now.
As much as I respect what Harrington has achieved in the past couple of years I believe he is not in the same league as Garcia when it comes to ball striking.
Its amazing how Garcia is world no.2 yet still has not won a Major. If only, he could sort out his putting.
I dont think Oliver Wison shold be upset. Garcia is a world class player and being second to him is no mean achievement..keep going Wilson, victories will come soon.
As to Garcia..time to put a Major on the portfolio...hopefully in 2009...
