Former Ferrari grand prix ace Eddie Irvine has dismissed the racist insults aimed at newly-crowned Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton as 'sticks and stones' - and suggested the McLaren-Mercedes star should rise above the abuse.
Irvine has joined David Coulthard and Mark Webber in insisting that F1 does not have a problem with racism - agreeing the recent jibes aimed at newly-crowned world champion Lewis Hamilton were in "bad taste" but arguing they are not an issue "as long as they physically don't hurt anyone".
The remarks - posted on 'voodoo-style' Spanish website 'Pincha la Rueda de Hamilton' ('Burst Hamilton's Tyre') - provoked widespread condemnation and revulsion within the F1 paddock when they came to light shortly ahead of the title-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos just over a week ago.
The reaction of the sport's commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone - seemingly suggesting Spanish supporters' blacked-out faces during a test in Barcelona earlier this year had been "probably meant as a joke" - elicited an angry response from anti-racism campaigners and even Hamilton himself.
Following Coulthard's insistence that "F1 may have many failings, but it does not come close to the racism you see in football", Irvine agreed that the whole matter has been blown out of all proportion, and suggested Hamilton should simply rise above the abuse.
"The world is full of people who are racists and we are never going to change that," the 43-year-old former Ferrari star said in his column for Virgin Media, dismissing the comments as the result of poor education.
"The world is full of people who like black people and people who like white people. Who cares?
"They can do what they want on the internet as long as they physically don't hurt anyone. I'm a big believer in 'sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me'.
"Call me what you want, I don't give a damn, leave it at that."
Irvine, a Northern Irishman who holds both British and Irish nationalities, was subjected to threats and harassment from sectarians after the Irish flag was raised following his podium finish at the 1997 Argentine Grand Prix.

And I KNOW you're wrong. I'm sorry to say it but your views simply echo the gross generalizations of racists (not to say you are a racist, but..), and the fact that you now bring crime into it is further proof of this. Anti-white racists can highly terrible crimes like sexual acts upon infant children, and point out that 99 times out of 100 it's carried out by white men. IMO, it would be ignorant, offensive and wrong to suggest this says something about ALL white men, and yet this is how you're acting towards black and asians. So as I said before, stop generalizing people.
TO... Damocles (POST 28)
ALL CRIME IS wrong regardless who does it, & whilst you may wish to classify certain types of crime to certain people, to make your point - your Perception is DISTORTED.
E.G. The most HEINOUS CRIME of Paedophilia (sexual violation against pure & innocent Children) is carried out pre-dominently by Whites especially Catholic Priests! Yet they receive pathetic sentences (Pray, do tell - what is "their" excuse?)
Having said that, ALL CRIMES have been carried out by an element of ALL Races, so we "ALL" have a responsibility to Solve things - AS YOU PUT IT!
Hot Rats: I did read his comment through to the end, The figures quoted were in general home office stasitics. but you are correct when saying it is a contenscious issue, but it certaily will not go away all the time everybody evades the issues as the politicians are doing as it just breeds contention.
Ian P: A careful and considered post. NOT.
Before blacks started complaining of racism, it was the Irish people that was taking all the stick and even the English used to have a pass time called Paddy Bashing, So I would think Irvine if he left Ireland he would of seen this also
* HAIL CHAMPION HAMILTON! *
There is racism & prejudice all over - AND those who perpetuate it were born that way & will Die that way! (and in between, they & their loved ones will suffer the consequences of their evil thoughts & actions!)
...SO Leave them to their vile feelings of hatred - For those of us SUPERIOR Types whether White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Orientals, who do not fit into the INFERIOR category of "Racists" lets celebrate!
And Even if you are not a Hamilton Supporter, (it's your right to support whoever you want) we can ALL still celebrate that we at least don't qualify for the Category of a RACIST!
rundoderun: And your point is?
Hi dr_yassam, you make a good point once again.
Damocles did you read dr_yassam's post all of the way through? If you are going to quote statistics, especially those as contentious as the ones you reported, then I think you should quote your source. I hope I am wrong but it seems as if you are just pulling them out of the air.
marcos9540: What? Many black footballers have to put up with racist abuse all of the time.
Its easy for people to say its not racism just a joke when their not on the end of it. What happened in Spain is disgusting and for Irvine to say its ok as long as no one was hurt is even worse. I wonder if he would feel the same if it was happening to him or someone he cared about. As long as we have people saying this sort of thing is ok it will continue. Time to stand up and say this behaviour is unacceptable until we do things will never change.

DR_Vassam: Sorry I think you are wrong. If an Asian / Black guy doesn't get a job it is immediately put down to his colour instead of whether he is able to do the work. A drive by shooting occurs as has happened in Derby last night 8 times out of ten it is carried out by Black or Asian youths. Muggings occur, 7 out of ten times it involves Black youths:Much of this comes down to education or the lack of. The Asian & black communities must take resposibilty & solve it.The education system is there, make use of it.
Marnio: you have forgotten to sign your posts as 'marnio the pratt from peru'.

With all due respect Damocles, one of the 'features' of racism is the generalization of people based upon their race, and therefore it results in the attitude that 'they're all the same'. For the MAJORITY of Asian amd Black individuals, if something doesn't go their way they only see it as unfortunate, just like you and everyone else. Only a tiny MINORITY look to blame their misfortunes on racism without evidence. So please stop generalizing people, ethnic minorities within the UK ARE in control of their own destinies and most certainly don't blame their problems on white people. Those that do are only a tiny percentage. Hence by the same argument, only a small minority of womem blame their failures on sexism, therefore it would be wrong to claim this is true about ALL women.
Eddie Irvine was a great driver and team player. If not for the cockup by his pit crew loosing a wheel he would have been champion in 1999. Hakkinen was champion and only beat Eddie by 2 points even tho Eddie was playing second fiddle to MS up until he broke his leg in Silverstone - Eddie who my erse!
Nice one g.gcww
The term racist is too freely used these days. If you are Asian or Black & something doesn't go your way then it is racism. If you have a difference of opinion with an Asian or Black then you are racist.Being a "whitey" I'm kinda getting tired of being the whipping boy in this contest & having to walk on egg shells when addressing racial issues. It's about time the ethnic minorities within the Uk took control of their own destinies and stopped blaming every problem they have on the white people.
Post 11, lets not forget that when Schumaker broke his leg at Silverstone Ferrari had to hide one of Eddie's wheels during a pitstop that year to stop him from becoming the World Champion and then taking the number 1 plate away from Ferrari with him.
in the philippines, weve heard lots of racism just bacause of their nationality, but so what, instead they proved themselves not the worthless whatever they call it..look what theyve achieved..so what, words might hurt, but are they physically hurt,no...emotionally maybe, forget what they say coz when you ignore them, its like getting back at them..in the end they'll just shut up...maybe theyre not yet used to hamilton defeating fernando or whoever driver theyre backing...
IAN M, how can you say Hamiltons father is always in front of the Camera and he wants all the limelight, he's not the one holding the camera? The Producers are the ones calling the shots when it comes to which camera show's the feed, the producer not the Hamiltons. During the season, I saw Massa's father on Camera as much as Hamiltons which I believe proves my point.
Here's looking forward to next season.
not everybody who dislikes him is a racest I admit i cant stand the big headed little t*at but it because he is a big headed t*at & not because he is a big headed black t*at
