World Cup qual. - Wembley officials deny damage

Eurosport - Wed, 12 Nov 13:19:00 2008

Wembley Stadium officials have denied reports that storms ripped a 40-foot crack in the home of English football.

2007 England-Germany Wembley - 0

According to workers at the state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2007, heavy winds and torrential rain battered the £827 million development and left a 1.5-inch split in the walls on Monday.

"The ground shook. There were people in the lifts and they were terrified," said an employee.

"Then the major crack appeared from the floor of level one and snaked up to level four. It happened in an instant and wasn't something that had been growing over weeks or months."

But a spokesman for Wembley has moved to deny any damage was done.

"There was some minor movement in the building on Monday morning. Our engineers have reviewed the situation and reports indicate that this has been caused by natural settling," read a statement.

"As with all large structures, the stadium has been designed with movement tolerance factored in. Reports suggesting that there is a crack in the stadium as a result of this movement are incorrect.

"It's business as usual and the stadium remains fully operational."

  3. It's a pity. But you guys that are happy that the stadium is falling apart, I wish you could go back to your country and make it more habitable. If things were okay in your country, you would not be running around like a yo-yo. Even though I am not British, I visited the Wembley Station and it is a Master piece. Hope this is not to scare people from the World Cup. Anyways, I trust things will be sorted out soon.

  6. Why the hurrah about croke park?? The local residents didn't even want it and it's only 3/4 of it you can even call a stadium, the hill 16 end hardly qualifies it's more like something out of the lower leagues.

I thought this thread was about Wembley not Wimblodon wherever that is

  9. wat useually happens with the contracts on building work,is one company gets loads of moneyfor the job ,then they sub contract a company in ,2 do the actual work, they then pay them a lot less, than wat they got,the second company that is 2 do the work ,then employes cheap work force,2 do the work even cheaper,so in the end u end up with a building,u payed frew the nose for, wich actually cost a lot less, hence why its starting 2 fall apart!this happens all the time.

  10. wembley stadium hahaha bet the Germans are sorry for taking ownership of it now, bet the daft buggers didn't see how it was built and who "assembled" it. They could always blame the French for the @#$% bricks that was used, maybe even the Mexicans for the @#$%e cement. Just goes to show, if you want a job doing right, use British workers and products, and most of all, don't try and do it on the cheap!

  11. Even though I am Welsh and we have a strong secure stadium in Cardiff of which we are proud, there is no point in putting blame on these or those about the workmanship. Multi national workforces are everywhere in the world now so we should recognise that. If Wembley does need some extensive repair we in Wales will welcome anyone as we did for all those cup finals with no trouble at all on the streets. It was a pleasure to see the fans. In any event the English football team never play well at Wembley as they get stick from the fanatics from clubs who come along to goad each other and shout hate messages at Ashley Cole
