World Cup qual. - Wembley officials deny damage

Eurosport - Wed, 12 Nov 13:19:00 2008

Wembley Stadium officials have denied reports that storms ripped a 40-foot crack in the home of English football.

2007 England-Germany Wembley - 0

According to workers at the state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2007, heavy winds and torrential rain battered the £827 million development and left a 1.5-inch split in the walls on Monday.

"The ground shook. There were people in the lifts and they were terrified," said an employee.

"Then the major crack appeared from the floor of level one and snaked up to level four. It happened in an instant and wasn't something that had been growing over weeks or months."

But a spokesman for Wembley has moved to deny any damage was done.

"There was some minor movement in the building on Monday morning. Our engineers have reviewed the situation and reports indicate that this has been caused by natural settling," read a statement.

"As with all large structures, the stadium has been designed with movement tolerance factored in. Reports suggesting that there is a crack in the stadium as a result of this movement are incorrect.

"It's business as usual and the stadium remains fully operational."

  2. Hasn't anyone got anything better to do than to point the finger of blame?

One thought though since you are all discussing cultures, why can the Scots be Scottish, the Welsh, obviously Welsh, the Irish Irish yet us born and bread English, as generations of my family before, me must be called British!

  3. paul j, you were clearly in one of the "special" children classes in school. Shakey died nearly 4 hundred years ago, not in 1816. And you cannot spell for toffee. You bellend.

  4. Paul j, you read my mind. Why are most English companies using foreign workers if they were so useless?

  6. It is quite obviously the fault of the Irish. All their moaning on comment boards and the intensity of their 19th century hatreds have shaken the foundations. Shouldn't have built it so close to Kilburn!

  7. Get ready to play all the cup finals in Wales again.
That happened to a bridge in my town and it was closed for over a year.
Time to close the stadium i'd say.

  9. Really disapointing for London!!! Wimblodon is an ICONE for london as is the eiffel tower for France.Although there is still Shakspear litterature, it's sad to count on a man ho died since two ore more centuries for rescue again and again for the british sense.

  10. Silly Brits. When the Stadium was finished no one said anything against Polish workers or any other Eastern European builders. You were to proud. Why didn't you blame the Aussie company back then? All this hate for foreigners? Why? You stole everything from India, invaded Ireland and African countries? Should anyone love you? One can barely see a white man in London. English my @#$%! A crack in the stadium??!! Too bad it's still standing

  11. As with everything british... when things aint working well, its time to blame the f**king immigrants. When the cash crunch hit home 3 wks back, they went for the immigrants' jugular. Funny they never see anything 'wong' in themselves..lol

  13. This is laughable, the anti-english mob coming out of the woodwork to gloat(particularily you Lucifer). Why do some Scottish people have to feel so threatened by England/ English people? You really should get out more and stop reading your biased Scottish newspapers, time to be less bitter and move on!! Oh and by the way, I am Scottish before you start...

Have actually been to Wembley since the 60s, it was in a dreadful state. Perhaps the real question should be, why bother spending £750 million on the new complex when it worked so well sending the players around the country so we could all get a chance to watch. As for the dumb racist comments, well said Jackson and Lucifer.

  18. Wembley Stadium, British???? Built by an Australian company, which used German and Italian steel, held together with Mexican cement and French bricks, all put together with thousands of Eastern Europeans, who used American and German machinary, of course it's British, yeah right!!!

  19. I would say that this is probably another case of poor quality materials and poor quality workmanship LOL!

From Lorraine E, on Wed 12 Nov 4:16PM
  20. "If you had read the original statement correctly instead of jumping straight onto your soapbox you would see it IS embarrassing to be British because of all the racist comments being hurled about"

it does not embarrass me one bit i am Scottish ... that doesn't mean to say i hate England, Wales & N Ireland ... because i don't .. it means i love Scotland
