Tilson happy to avoid cup shock

Wed 12 Dec, 12:16 PM

Southend manager Steve Tilson was pleased to see his side avoid an FA Cup upset as they cruised to a 3-0 victory against Oxford. The Shrimpers set up a third round home clash against Dagenham after playing before 2,742 fans - their lowest FA Cup attendance since the match against Tonbridge Wells Rangers in December 1910.

That statistic did not worry Tilson, though, who said: "We could have got into double figures, but in the end we got through to face Dagenham."

Charlie MacDonald netted a brace and Dean Morgan were on target for Southend.

Tilson added: "I was pleased with the way we approached the game and we treated Oxford as we would any other side.

"If you are complacent against sides like that you can get bitten. We should have scored a few more goals but we kept a clean sheet."
