Champions League - Team of the week

Eurosport - Fri, 12 Dec 12:06:00 2008

It has not been the best week for English teams in the Champions League and as a result Wayne Rooney is the solitary representative from the Premier League in our best-of XI.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Champions League Bayern Lyon-Bayern Klose - 0

Goalkeeper: Stanislav Bogush (Dynamo Kiev) - The Ukrainian stopper kept Fenerbahce at bay with a string of saves and helped secure his side a place in the UEFA Cup.

Right-back: Andreas Hinkel (Celtic) - Hinkel put in a good shift against Villarreal, and made a superb saving tackle to deny Chilean Mathias Fernandez early on.

Centre-back: Bruno Alves (Porto) - In addition to a commanding defensive performance, Alves got himself on the scoresheet against Arsenal with a powerful header from a corner.

Centre-back: Steve Olfers (Aalborg) - Made an excellent tackle to deny Manchester United's Paul Scholes late on and impressed throughout.

Left-back: Juan Vargas (Fiorentina) - The Peruvian full-back was impressive against Steaua Bucharest, patrolling his flank confidently and supplying an inch-perfect cross to set up Fiorentina's winner.

Right midfield: Lisandro López (Porto) - Lisandro's goal against Arsenal was a real belter, the wideman racing in behind Mikael Silvestre and crashing a shot into the roof of the net.

Central midfield: Matteo Brighi (Roma) - Brighi put Roma ahead against Bordeaux, setting the Italians up for a victory which would send them through top of Group A.

Central midfield: Giorgios Karagounis (Panathinaikos) - Karagounis is a fine ball carrier, and he caused Anorthosis Famagusta all kinds of trouble with his mazy dribbles in Greece. It might have been scrappy, but his goal put the Greek side top of their group and above Internazionale.

Left midfield: Arjen Robben (Real Madrid) - Robben produced a swashbuckling performance against Zenit St Petersburg. The flying Dutchman got on the scoresheet with an absolute belter and will have impressed new manager Juande Ramos no end after his red card at the weekend.

Centre forward: Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich) - The German international bagged a clinical brace against Lyon, linking superbly with Franck Ribery to run the French side ragged.

Centre forward: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - Rooney attacks every game as if it were his last, and United's clash against Aalborg was no exception. The England forward worked tirelessly, scored a fine goal and still found time for some handbags.

  11. fgraba is right, Liverpool were the best english side this week. Ryan Babel deserves a nod, along with Riera, who did score the best goal. Also, Raul should be ahead of Wayne Rooney. Rooney scored a goal he should have, and didn't show the work rate Carlos Tevez did. Tevez ahead of Rooney, and Raul ahead of Tevez.

  12. As my previous comments were ignored, here's another one. Liverpool were the best English team in Europe this week, despite your comment that English team had not done well this week! They Won away from home, with a second string team, best Central defender in Carragher and the Best goal scored in europe this week by Riera! Your article is not very objective!
