Premier League - Van der Sar signs new deal

Eurosport - Fri, 12 Dec 22:26:00 2008

Edwin van der Sar has signed a new deal at Manchester United to keep him at the club until 2010.

FOOTBALL Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der sar - 0

The veteran Dutchman has excelled since his arrival from Fulham three seasons ago and put an end to the constant criticism of United's goalkeepers.

And Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Van der Sar will remain at Old Trafford until 2010 before giving way to Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak, saying : "We have agreed a new one-year contract with Edwin."

He added: "His experience, temperament, professionalism and performance level have not changed one bit since he has been with us.

"Obviously, it will be his last year. He will be almost 40 then, which is a great credit to the lad.

"He has been absolutely marvellous here."

Van der Sar has collected two Premier League titles with the Red Devils and also saved Nicolas Anelka's penalty to give Ferguson's men their Champions League shoot-out triumph over Chelsea in Moscow.

He retired from international duty with Holland at the end of Euro 2008, although he has since returned on a one-off basis to help out during October's World Cup qualifiers due to injury.

A European Cup winner in his youth with Ajax, Van der Sar also had a couple of years with Juventus when Ferguson did not move fast enough after highlighting him as a replacement for Peter Schmeichel in 1999.

Van der Sar's vast experience makes him the ideal man to help develop Foster and Kuszczak, both of whom have been given sporadic opportunities this term without laying claim to the number one jersey on a permanent basis.

  2. Those who are over-rating VDS should remember that ManU won titles before he joined them. With Juventus he was actually poor and he left because he could not perform as expected and as he thought he could. He was replaced by Buffon and was a smart decision. The only serious performance for VDS was with Ajax and he was indeed good then, but also the team was very very good then. Now remember that he achieved nothing with his national team and that tells you alot that he does not make things happen. In his club carrier, excluding in Ajax when he was good, he has made good saves and was known for his consistency but how often did he turn games around? How often did he make a crazy saving or an unbelievable moves. He is not even a penalty-saving specialist so if he did well in a game that does not mean he is best at it. Zubizarreta won so many titles with Barca but not many rate him as a top goalkeeper. VDS is a good goalkeeper, for sure, but nothing more..

  9. Van de Sar has been great it is true and I agree with those who say a keeper can go on up to 40ish as Jennings and Shilton did. However there are signs that Van de Sar is not getting to balls he was a couple of years ago although he still looks fit to go on. One thing you must say about Fergie, and I am not a fan now, is that he plans for the future and is ruthless about it. To give one of the understudies a chance to break through is what he would be advised to do. I could not really offer you a firm opinion about the greatest of them all but contributors have mentioned a few like Yashin. For his size Banks was very agile and that save from the Pele jacknife was one of the best ever.
