George Burley claimed his Southampton side were lucky to come away with a victory from their Championship clash at home to Scunthorpe. The visitors had numerous chances to win the game but found Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in inspired form between the posts.
Burley said: "We never really got going and I felt Scunthorpe were really unlucky not to win the game.
"The balance in the midfield was not right and to be honest Scunthorpe played so much better than us.
"I have to give them credit for coming out and trying to play football away from home.
"They are a really good side who pass the ball well and if they keep on playing like that then they won't go down this season."
The visitors almost took the lead inside the first 10 seconds - Saints midfielder Inigo Idiakez lost the ball from the kick-off to Paul Hayes, who ran through - but Davis managed to gather the ball at his feet.
Midfielder Ian Morris then went close on 60 seconds but could not get enough on the ball and scuffed his shot over the crossbar.
Southampton took the lead in the 25th minute through Grzegorz Rasiak, with his seventh goal of the season.
Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman picked out Rasiak in the six-yard box and the Polish international striker stabbed the ball home right-footed from four yards.
Davis made a fine save from Matthew Sparrow in the 61st minute when he tipped his 25-yard shot onto the crossbar.
Then Morris hit a 25-yard free-kick which was heading for the top left hand corner of Davis' goal - but the keeper leapt to his right to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins claimed his side will continue to try playing football to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
Scunthorpe have only won one game in the last 17 but Atkins reckons his young side with an average age of 22 can still haul themselves out of the relegation zone.
Adkins said: "Ultimately it is about winning games but I want to do that playing football the right way and play properly.
"I'm a big believer that you get your rewards if you keep on playing football the way football should be played and we are going to continue doing that.
"At the start of the season everyone said we did not have a cat in hell's chance of surviving but we still think we can and our aim is to keep on proving people wrong who think we are going down."
