McParland rues poor defending

Sun 13 Jan, 06:01 PM

Notts County boss Ian McParland cursed his team's inability to defend set-pieces as veteran striker Peter Thorne gave Bradford a 3-0 win.Thorne's first goal came after 34 minutes when he applied the finishing touch from close range after Lawrie Dudfield had headed defender David Wetherall's header off the line after Paul Evans' corner.

It was from another Evans corner that Thorne scored his second goal after 58 minutes as the former Wales international picked out Thorne and the striker scored with a low first-time shot into the far corner.

Thorne completed his hat-trick in the last minute with a smart first-time shot from Joe Colbeck's right-wing cross.

The Magpies troubled Bradford for a short spell immediately after half-time, but it was not until stoppage time that they produced their best effort - a fierce 20-yard shot from Richard Butcher that goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts did well to save.

County are without a win in six matches and manager McParland said: "We conceded two goals from corners by switching off defensively and we cannot afford to do that."
