Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander has defended his decision to sell striker Martin Gritton to League Two rivals Chesterfield. The 30-year-old last week joined the Spireites for an undisclosed fee and penned a two-and-a-half-year deal.
He scored seven goals for the Silkmen this season but Alexander is hoping his departure will open the door for a new arrival.
He told the club's official website: "I'm sure his departure will have provoked a lot of debate, and in many quarters I suspect the club will be accused of a lack of ambition.
"You have to make a judgment call and in my view the deal was best in both the interests of the club and the player.
"As one of the better paid professionals on the books, his departure of course gives me more scope to bring in a few of the players I have been looking at."
