Defender impressed with Birchall

Tue 13 Jan, 02:00 PM

Brighton defender Andrew Whing has called on Seagulls boss Micky Adams to sign his former Coventry team-mate Chris Birchall. The Trinidad and Tobago international has joined Albion on trial in a bid to earn a deal with the club.

And Whing is certain the 24-year-old would be an asset to the Seagulls' midfield ranks.

He told the Brighton Argus: "He's a good player, very good technically as well with a good range of passing.

"He was more a central midfielder when he came to Coventry from Port Vale but he played quite a few games wide on the right, just in front of me.

"He was quite direct when he played there, always looking to beat his man. He was very effective and could score goals but I think he prefers centre midfield."
