Chesterfield midfielder Derek Niven has thanked his boss and team-mates as he closes on a first-team return following his fight against cancer.Niven, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer, returned to training last week and could make his 200th league appearance for the Spireites at Chester this weekend.

He told the Sheffield Star: "I've been overwhelmed with the support and messages from fans. The manager, Lee Richardson, has been first-class.

"He phoned me every day and the lads at the club have been great. My family's been strong, my friends have been there for me and that's what's got me through it.

"I'm just grateful to be playing again. My next game is my 200th and I'm going to enjoy every game with relish.

"The experience has given me a different outlook on life, I'll not take as much for granted. I'll look forward more rather than dwell on things and hopefully it will all make me a better player and a better person."
