Defeat Hits GB Olympic Hopes

Tue 13 Jan, 11:09 PM

Great Britain women's coach Mark Clark admitted the pressure appeared to get to his team tonight as they suffered a 60-55 loss to Finland to leave their Olympic hopes in the balance.

A second loss in four days has left GB with only two games to save their Division A status in Europe - a vital part of convincing FIBA that they are worthy of taking the hosts' place in London in three years time.

Finland are the team that can deny GB and victory tonight would have left them in a very strong position. However, some poor shooting at key moments turned the game against the hosts in Worcester.

"Maybe the pressure of the game got to us. We knew they would zone us and we were more than adequately prepared," said Clark.

"We had enough chances in the first half to win the game and the way we started the game I fully expected us to finish plays better. It's disappointing because we were in control but just couldn't score when we needed to.

"We always knew playing this number of games in such a short time would be a factor and we were a very tired team today.

"I expect us to win in Bosnia but to do so in Romania will need one hell of a performance. This team doesn't want to be a B Division team."

Finishing proved to be GB's undoing as they surrendered the lead in the final three minutes and missed four chances to take it back, including back-to-back lay-up attempts from veteran guard Rosalee Mason, who made only two of 12 shots from the field.

Centre Kim Butler had identical figures and as a whole, GB made only 14 of 48 (29%) of their two-point attempts and three of 17 (18%) of their three-point attempts, compared to figures of 30% and 40% respectively for Finland.

With Mason and Butler struggling, Sarah McKay finished as GB's top scorer with 15 points.

"It's heartbreaking," she said. "At the end we gave it to them. We had every opportunity to put it away but we just couldn't do it. We have two big games left now and we need to learn from our mistakes.

"I think we can bounce back. It will be hard but we need to stay together now. Bosnia will be hard and they will be our first focus. We are going to two places which won't be very welcoming."

GB will now travel to Sarajevo to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday in a game they should win after enjoying a 91-58 rout over the same team in Sheffield last week.

However, they will end the six-game campaign away to Romania, who have been the class of the field so far.

That is likely to leave GB hoping that the Romanians are no longer interested after securing their own safety with victory over Bosnia earlier today.
