Premier League - Men charged over Sol abuse

Police have charged 11 people with indecent chanting aimed at Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell during a match against Tottenham in September.

The men were arrested in connection with alleged racist and homophobic chanting towards former Tottenham captain Campbell during the game at Fratton Park.

The 11, including three juveniles, have been bailed by police to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on January 20.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said a further five men captured in photographs taken at the game were still being sought.

Those charged are Dean Nelson, 23, of Southbury Road, Enfield, north London; Bradley Barnes, 35, of Malmesbury Park Road, Bournemouth, Dorset; Oliver Silvester, 28, of High Street, Southampton, Hampshire; Stuart Turner, 34, of Queen Street, Wellington, Telford, Shropshire; Richard Allen Gibbs, 35, of Ormonde Road, Wokingham, Berkshire; Ian Trow, 48, of Kingshill Drive, Deans Hanger, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire; Keith Stevens, 54, of Portland Close, Hailsham, East Sussex and Joe Turner, 18, of The Lindons, Langdon Hills, Basildon, Essex.

The three youths charged were a 15-year-old from Winchmore Hill, north London, a 15-year-old from Purley, Surrey, and a 13-year-old from Deans Hanger, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

The police spokeswoman added no further action would be taken against another man, aged 18, from Essex.

  1. Mr Pompey was on sky sports news after defoe left and said that if football fans followed their heads, no-one would go anymore. Well done that man!!
    Its time fans realised that until they get over the "I haven't missed a match for 25 years" mentality and boycotted games until players and their agents clean up their acts, that nothing will change.
    If players (and agents etc...) act in an immoral and , some would say , an indecent way re contracts etc, without any respect for their clubs or the fans......how can you expect fans to have any respect for them??
    Even Ian Wright said that campbell must have known how spurs fan would re-act. Campbell could have gone anywhere but to go there???? I wonder how much he thought about the £125000 a week v the hatred from spurs fans??? I bet his agent (thinking of his cut) told him it would soon die down! Could have been worse sol, you could have played in columbia!!

  5. serves them right. how many are they out of the thousands of fans? or is it because sol is a black man. i thought all these about racism is past and gone and that the world is more advanced and civilized than this? good a thing its not their decision to make choice of players that should play in a match else their prejudice would have killed Sol's career. the police are doing a nice job, they should keep it up. some people do not deserve to watch matches live.

  10. johnston_yvonne, I dont have a problem with Portsmouth or you, just people who make sweeping generalizations, not all Spurs fans are racist scum and you will find that Spurs fans take more stick than any other fans in London because of the Jewish connections, West ham and Chelsea fans are far worse than our fans.
    My main concern is that this has been turned into some media circus, yes the chants were unsulting but what about the Liverpool and Leeds fans who sing the Munich songs or the Man Utd fans who sing about Heysel, isnt this just as bad, or is that acceptable because its not just insulting one individual

  15. James b, Its only a slur if people take offence. If everyone just chilled out and didn't go crazy evertime someone makes a reference to them that they didn't like, then there would be very little racism.

    E.g. A black man calling me 'vanilla face' would be a slur, BUT i wouldn't care and i certainly wouldn't press charges or call him a racist.
