Premier League - Torres: Title is United's to lose

Eurosport - Tue, 13 Jan 14:48:00 2009

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has acknowledged Manchester United are favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Torres's Reds currently sit top of the table, but United enhanced their credentials with a 3-0 demolition of title rivals Chelsea last weekend.

United can move above Liverpool in the table if they win their two games this week against Wigan and Bolton - and Torres accepts their arch-rivals are now in the driving seat.

"They're the clear favourites to win the title," said Torres. "We're working hard to compete with them and finish above them and we're on course to achieve that.

"We know it's possible for us to win this season but we have to fight to the very end to do so.

"It's obvious that we know all about them. They are the champions of Europe and the world.

"We know the class they have in their team. They have some of the best players in the world."

Torres, who finished third to United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the FIFA World Player of the Year award on Monday, admits the showdown between the two clubs at Old Trafford on March 14 could prove decisive.

"I think the game at Old Trafford will decide the title," noted Torres. "If everything goes as we expect then we will go there in a similar position to now.

"We will have to play our game to try and get a result in a ground, which in the last few years has not been good for Liverpool."

Torres refused to get involved in the war of words between Reds boss Rafa Benitez and United chief Sir Alex Ferguson following the Spaniard's outspoken attack on the Scot last week.

Torres added: "The managers make remarks. They have their reasons for that but I won't be looking at them."

"Why would Torres who is a sportman have wanted to join manure
And play together with a collection of Cheats Freaks Thugs and a
Crying Ladyboy and all this under a creepy vile manager ?"

Please stop talking @#$%. Cheats - Torres dives, even Gerrard dives. Thugs - Who recently got arrested for assault? Your very own Steven Gerrard! Stop hating Man Utd 'cos you're jealous of their success!

  3. 163 said this "If ManU are to lose then they are not fovourite to win"

Question: Who said Manu are to lose?

    Answer: Nobody

Question: Does that make your post irrelevent?

    Answer: Yes

Question: What does it mean when you say that something is 'theirs to lose'

Answer: It means that if they perform as they should, they are the most likely to win, and if they end up losing it it will be their own fault.

  7. Fernando, an extraordinarily exceptional player, he means a lot for Spain and Liverpool, with the capability to alter the situation on the pitch, not lots of players can match this!

  10. ManU can forget about all the remarks that they are already champions. Instead they should concentrate on every games for the rest of the season. They should remain focused simply because the championship is not won yet till May and unless they win all the remaining matches the other teams still have got a chance. So stay focused and concentrate.

  13. Torres talks a lot of sense here but the biggest mistake he ever made was joining Liverpool instead of Man Utd. He probably realises that now. Just think what a team with Ronaldo, Torres and Rooney would do. Frightening. It is as well for the rest of the premiership that he made this mistake.

  14. 40m for Torres to come to Old Trafford, plus Liverpool can have John OShea as well................now that is a good deal !

  15. dom S, exactly.. the only team in England with a squad showing depth as well as quality is Manchester United.. but Chelsea do come close.
I think Chelsea's first team squad is better than Manchester United's, but the reserves are a different case.

In Europe however, Milan, Inter, Madrid and Barca have squads to match.

  16. 164. u just spoke a load of bs.
man utd HAVE the upperhand. what part of that don't you understand
the title is in their hands, it's theirs to lose.

From i am a teacup, on Tue 13 Jan 7:16PM
  17. wa.irvine is correct. But just one question for you... Besides Chelsea, who else do you see have a better squad than Man U? Because, from my view( neutral) they have a very good, expensive squad (which emphasizes their quality) and it has a lot of depth.

From dom S, on Tue 13 Jan 7:15PM
  18. 161.If ManU are to lose then they are not fovourite to win. Favour goes to the side that has the upperhand. Thus if ManU is the favourite to win then they is the greater possibility that the will not lose because any loser has lesser favour to gain. Therefore both statements do not imply each other

From Michael, on Tue 13 Jan 7:09PM
  19. as for micpando's statement..
that's only true at the beginning of the season.

halfway through the season, the team who can achieve the most points, is usually favourite.
in this case it's man utd.
and the above statement also means it's theirs to lose

From i am a teacup, on Tue 13 Jan 6:55PM
  20. for those lacking the brain capacity..
the statement the title is man utd's to lose, simply means- all man utd need to do is keep winning, to become champions.
it doesn't matter who's at the top of the table, as they have played more games.
The maximum number of points Liverpool can possibly achieve, is less than man utd can achieve.
    simple as. end of.

and don't disrespect torres either, he's clearly the best striker in the world at this point in time.

as for rafa, he is anxious and scared- ranting, and claiming not wanting to start mindgames, while playing them qualifies as him being worried.
sir alex on the other hand has been in this position MANY times, against teams with better squads and tactics i must say, so why would he be worried?
