Premier League - Torres: Title is United's to lose

Eurosport - Tue, 13 Jan 14:48:00 2009

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has acknowledged Manchester United are favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Torres's Reds currently sit top of the table, but United enhanced their credentials with a 3-0 demolition of title rivals Chelsea last weekend.

United can move above Liverpool in the table if they win their two games this week against Wigan and Bolton - and Torres accepts their arch-rivals are now in the driving seat.

"They're the clear favourites to win the title," said Torres. "We're working hard to compete with them and finish above them and we're on course to achieve that.

"We know it's possible for us to win this season but we have to fight to the very end to do so.

"It's obvious that we know all about them. They are the champions of Europe and the world.

"We know the class they have in their team. They have some of the best players in the world."

Torres, who finished third to United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the FIFA World Player of the Year award on Monday, admits the showdown between the two clubs at Old Trafford on March 14 could prove decisive.

"I think the game at Old Trafford will decide the title," noted Torres. "If everything goes as we expect then we will go there in a similar position to now.

"We will have to play our game to try and get a result in a ground, which in the last few years has not been good for Liverpool."

Torres refused to get involved in the war of words between Reds boss Rafa Benitez and United chief Sir Alex Ferguson following the Spaniard's outspoken attack on the Scot last week.

Torres added: "The managers make remarks. They have their reasons for that but I won't be looking at them."

  1. #160, what are you on about?

1)Torres: Title is United's to lose
2)"They're the clear favourites to win the title," bal bla bla bla

If the Title is United's to lose, then that necessarily means that they are the favourite.

Similarly, if Man Utd are the favourites to win the title, it is only them who can 'lose' the title.

I think you are confused because you don't seem to be aware that what the phrases mean. Essentially, both of the phrases above mean that it is the most likely outcome that Man Utd win the premier league.

1)Torres: Title is United's to lose
2)"They're the clear favourites to win the title," bal bla bla bla

    1) cannot imply 2) and 2)will never imply 1)

So maybe Torres spoke in Spanish and your SYSTRANS did it in Arab before you BIG head did it in the QUeens language

  5. As an Evertonian I can only hope that the top five all fall away and Everton win each and every game they play until the end of the season. However, as a pragmatist I have to accept that this will not occur and I believe that Man U are too strong for the rest of the competition. They have a great squad and a very high level of self belief and are lucky to have so many individual players who can change a game around in a second. I agree with Torres who, if he was fit and playing for Man U, would be the icing on their cake.

  7. it`s very noticeable that the anti -man utd rants here are from people that can barely spell. In a way it is good that a feeble team like Liverypoo can garner support from the feeble-minded otherwise they would have only a criminal support. Glad that the week-end`s results have so rattled the evolutionary cul-de-sac on the mersey
