Premier League - Torres: Title is United's to lose

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has acknowledged Manchester United are favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Torres's Reds currently sit top of the table, but United enhanced their credentials with a 3-0 demolition of title rivals Chelsea last weekend.

United can move above Liverpool in the table if they win their two games this week against Wigan and Bolton - and Torres accepts their arch-rivals are now in the driving seat.

"They're the clear favourites to win the title," said Torres. "We're working hard to compete with them and finish above them and we're on course to achieve that.

"We know it's possible for us to win this season but we have to fight to the very end to do so.

"It's obvious that we know all about them. They are the champions of Europe and the world.

"We know the class they have in their team. They have some of the best players in the world."

Torres, who finished third to United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the FIFA World Player of the Year award on Monday, admits the showdown between the two clubs at Old Trafford on March 14 could prove decisive.

"I think the game at Old Trafford will decide the title," noted Torres. "If everything goes as we expect then we will go there in a similar position to now.

"We will have to play our game to try and get a result in a ground, which in the last few years has not been good for Liverpool."

Torres refused to get involved in the war of words between Reds boss Rafa Benitez and United chief Sir Alex Ferguson following the Spaniard's outspoken attack on the Scot last week.

Torres added: "The managers make remarks. They have their reasons for that but I won't be looking at them."

  1. .....exclusive.....

Pls fans, especially those whose teams are below position 4 in the premier league or anywhere in the lower leagues, we don't just start commenting here just from nowhere. The criteria for viable comments is...

    1. Your team has a history of winning.
    2. Your manager chews.
    3. Your team has played in the champions league within the last two years.
    4. Your team/club has featured on this site for the last three days.

    So remember that.

  3. I thought this site was supposed to be sensibly discussing football, not the sexuallity of players or us contributors.
Leave it out lads & Lasses, in the end just one team will win the title, whichever that may be, good luck to them, there is always next season for the others to try again. At this time the title fight seems to be between 3 or 4 teams just 2 L'pool & Manu are in the driving seat, but there are still lots of games to play, anything can happen[remember Utd and Newcastle a few years back] many utd supporters will, they are at this time regularly quoting Keven Keegan since Beniyez spoke his mind,.
I thought I should say I love the way Torres plays, that dosent make me queer, it just shows I love football, good football whoever plays it. good luck to whoeve r are champions, and being a gunner fan I can only hope, MIRACLES DO HAPPEN....DONT THEY..

  15. The tabloids predict that the premier league this season will be shared between the Reds....for Historical purposes.
    But
Since then, Manutd remains the champions and this is a fact and not history.

Ronaldo will be allowed to play for liverpoop two games so that you guys can relax your galls...and...acids.

Politically, majority rule. Morally, if you cant beat them, just shut up.

  16. who give,s a @#$% about torres sexuality if he scares deffences and scores goals thats all that matters and as for the big club row that seems to b going on it appears it matters mostly to the untd fans like kids in the play ground my dads bigger than your dad winge winge winge just like ferguson has done since the inception of the premier lge he had the rule changed reggarding the ammont of overseas players he always questioned the refs time keeping Icould go on but it would make me as sad as a untd fan.But just so as you get it its what you have in the cabinet that matters.

  18. Willoco, words of truth are pouring out of your mouth. everything you say is spot on. How do you know all these things? I wish I had your intellect and accurate perception everything. I think you and Bobby should form a partnership. Lets give it up for TEAM SPEAK WITHOUT THINKING. By far the most interestign season of football in a long time. That's good for the game and us spectators. Lets hope it can continue and we have a great finish to the end of the season.
