Australian Open - Robson and Ward close on main draw
Britain’s Laura Robson and James Ward moved just one win away from reaching the Australian Open main draw after triumphs in qualifying.
Robson beat Italy’s Anna Floris 6-3 6-4 in just 56 minutes to continue her unerring progress as she looks to secure her place in the Melbourne main draw.
The 17-year-old will next take on either Kiki Bertens of Holland or Ukraine’s Olga Savchuk, knowing that a victory would be good enough for her to seal her progression.
Ward was also victorious as he overcame Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic 6-3 1-6 6-3 in impressive fashion.
He will next take on Igor Sisling following the Dutchman’s 7-6(8) 6-3 win over Igor Andreev with the winner elevated into the first round of the main draw.
However, there was disappointment for Naomi Broady after she lost 3-6 6-2 6-0 to American Alison Riske.
