Johnson refuses to get carried away

Wed 13 Feb, 11:00 AM

Gary Johnson refused to look too far ahead after his Bristol City side defeated Scunthorpe 1-0 to move into second in the Championship table.A fortuitous cross-cum-shot from Bradley Orr in the 83rd minute earnt City a double over the Iron and with just 14 games remaining, Johnson's side are ideally placed for a remarkable push for the Premiership.

West Brom's draw at home to Sheffield United allowed City to leapfrog them into second, but Johnson insisted he was never concerned about what his rivals were up to.

"The best result is our own," he said. "That's what we have to remember all the time but other results can help you out along the way.

"After 32 games, we're still there and people are still wondering when we're going to drop out of contention.

"We knew that we had to put in a good and solid away performance today. We frustrated the Scunthorpe crowd a bit, they didn't create a lot of chances and we got on the ball better in the second half.

"I don't know if the goal was a fluke. He hit three before that and if it was a cross then what a cross. You have to give him credit for moving that far up the field.

"We know that Scunthorpe are a battling team, especially here and that's why they did so well last year.

"We knew that it's not always pretty when you come here and we had to prove that we could play a different kind of game. On the day, we were the victors."

Johnson also played down the rivalry between the two sides that has existed since they went head to head in the League One title race last season.

Scunthorpe emerged victorious but Bristol City were unhappy with the way the Iron celebrated their 1-0 win at Glanford Park in February.

"We knew it was a grudge match," he said.

"But that's only because we have played them so many times. There's a respect there and I just had a chat with (Iron boss) Nigel Adkins and wished him all the best and told him I hope they get out of trouble."

Despite the defeat sending his side to the foot of the table, Adkins was adamant they would maintain their status in the second tier.

"We will stay up," he said. "The luck will come for us and the only way it will is through working hard. We need to keep the belief. Words are cheap but we need to work as hard as we can.

"The result is disappointing, as is the manner of it. The initial reaction (for the goal) was offside, but well done to the linesman, it was a great decision.

"If we'd have had a little bit more quality and a little bit more composure then we might have had a little bit more. It was at least a nil-nil performance from us.

"The effort and commitment was excellent. Jim Goodwin and Jack Cork were immense in the centre of midfield.

"But, with the anxiety that will come from our league position, then people are going to rush things and not show composure. But that will come.

"All in all, it was disappointing but you can't fault the players. But at the end of the day we didn't get the result. We're bottom now, but what a fantastic achievement it will be when we stay up."
