Knill praise for battling Shakers

Wed 13 Feb, 01:00 PM

Bury manager Alan Knill admitted his surprise after his League Two strugglers came back to secure a 2-2 draw against play-off chasing Wycombe.First-half goals from Argentinian midfielder Sergio Torres and in-form striker Scott McGleish gave Wanderers a deserved 2-0 interval lead.

But the Shakers fought back after the break with a 63rd-minute penalty from leading scorer Andy Bishop and a strike from substitute Brian Barry-Murphy.

"At half-time everyone in the ground probably thought the game was over, thinking it might be four or five nil," said Knill after his third game in charge since replacing Chris Casper.

"But in the second half our attitude was better and the players wanted to compete. It took 32 minutes to make a tackle and in this league you can't do that. You've got to make your tackles and win your headers.

"At least the lads showed they are not settling for where they are in the league. They want to get better and want the crowd to cheer them off at the end, not jeer them off like some people did at half-time."
