Roeder: Draw was fair result

Wed 13 Feb, 11:30 AM

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder had no complaints as his side's bid for a fourth successive Championship win was thwarted by a determined Hull side. The Canaries went in front after 19 minutes when Dion Dublin's looping header found the back of the net but they were pegged back eight minutes into the second half as youngster Fraizer Campbell latched on to a superb pass from veteran Jay-Jay Okocha to equalise.

Norwich may have dropped two home points but they are now unbeaten in 13 matches and Roeder was happy enough with the outcome afterwards.

"Sometimes in this game you have to settle for a point and this was one of those occasions," said the Norwich manager.

"I didn't think we deserved to lose the game but hand on heart I don't think we deserved to win it, so a draw was a fair result.

"The players think that way too, they are an honest group and they know they haven't done quite enough.

"They can certainly play a lot better than that, but it shows how far we've come since October that we can be a little bit disappointed at only drawing a game against a very good Hull side."

Roeder was disappointed with the defending that led to Hull's equaliser but paid tribute to the pass that led to the goal.

"It's not very often that I hang around after the final whistle to shake a player's hand but that's exactly what I did to Okocha," he said.

"I remember seeing him for the first time in the World Cup in France in 1998 and I've been an admirer of his ever since, he has been a tremendous player for a long, long time.

"And even now he's still got that quality. He played in a superb pass for their goal and although I was disappointed with our defending and the fact that a scuffed shot found the back of the net you have still got to applaud the quality of the pass.

"He's one of those players I wouldn't mind paying money to watch even now."

Hull City manager Phil Brown agreed with Roeder's verdict that a draw was a fair result.

He said: "We could have won it had their keeper not pulled off one of the saves of the season to keep out Fraizer Campbell's header just before he scored.

"But at the same time we had a lot of defending to do in the final 15 minutes and there were a lot of tired legs out there at the end.

"You've got to remember we were without five senior players because of injuries and some of the people I've had to bring in haven't played a lot of football recently.

"Fatigue certainly played a part out there but the lads never stopped battling for the cause and I can't praise them highly enough for that."

Hull remain nicely placed in the play-off picture with a match in hand on most of their rivals and Brown is pleased with their current form.

"We got a point here and we also drew at home to Blackpool on Saturday but overall it's eight points from the last four games and that's the sort of form you want at this stage of the season. The challenge now is to keep it going," he said.

Like his opposite number Brown was full of praise for Okocha who made a rare appearance for the Tigers because of the current injury problems.

"Jay-Jay is still a quality player and you could see that tonight," he said.

"I think it's fair to say we haven't seen the best of him here yet and I think he's still got a point to prove. I'm sure he'll have a part to play in our final 15 games."
