Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock insists two-goal hero Jamie Mackie still has a lot to learn despite a dream debut in the 3-0 victory over Barnsley.Mackie, a £145,000 signing from non-league Exeter last month, scored twice in the space of only nine minutes on Tuesday night after coming on as a 76th-minute substitute at Home Park.
The first came seconds after his introduction as he fired home from close range after latching onto a lobbed pass from Peter Halmosi.
The 22-year-old then showed great composure in the 85th minute, shrugging off the attentions of a defender before driving his angled shot into the far corner of the net.
Sturrock said: "The rest of his game when he came on, apart from the goals, was a nightmare.
"His other six touches were all passes that went to the opposition, but that's what we've got on our hands.
"He is a young, hungry person who wants to do well, and he has a tremendous knack, when the ball is bobbling about in the box, of finding the net.
"Hopefully that will never be changed, but there is a lot of work to be done on other parts of his game."
Argyle had taken the lead in controversial fashion in the sixth minute when Barnsley centre-back Lewin Nyatanga tangled with his Wales team-mate Jermaine Easter just outside the penalty area.
Nyatanga, on loan from Derby, was adjudged to have committed a professional foul by referee Andy Woolmer, and was sent off.
Pilgrims striker Steve MacLean rubbed salt into the Barnsley wounds by blasting home the resulting 20-yard free-kick to score his first goal for Argyle since his club-record £500,000 transfer from Cardiff last month.
Sturrock felt the dismissal of Nyatanga was "harsh", which was a viewpoint shared by Barnsley captain Brian Howard.
"I think it was a foul, and when you are the last defender, you are always in danger of getting yourself sent off, but it was far enough out for perhaps somebody else to get back and cover," he said.
"When he showed the red card, it was almost game over, especially when they scored from the following free-kick."
Barnsley manager Simon Davey immediately reshuffled his side following Nyatanga's departure, bringing on defender Bobby Hassell for striker Daniel Nardiello and only playing one man up front, and the margin of defeat was very harsh on the battling Tykes.
They came very close to making it 1-1 in the 65th minute when Anderson De Silva twisted and turned inside the penalty area before crashing his shot against the underside of the crossbar.
Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick also had to pull off a fine save from striker Jon Macken in the dying seconds of the game.
