Birthday Boy Ready For Gers Game

Wed 13 Feb, 08:09 AM

Alexandros Tziolis admits he would love to celebrate his birthday with a win over Rangers in the UEFA Cup.

The Panathinaikos midfielder will mark his 23rd birthday by taking part in the first leg of the last-32 tie at Ibrox.

But, although gunning for victory, he believes a draw would be enough to allow the Greeks to progress in Athens next week.

He said: "To win on my birthday? I would be really happy if that happens. A win would be great.

"But even if we got a draw, that would be good enough, and we would be satisfied with that."

Both teams sit at the summit of their respective domestic leagues and, although confident of Panathinaikos' chances of meeting either Braga or Werder Bremen in the next round, Tziolis insists they will not underestimate the threat of Rangers.

Aberdeen may have been swept aside in a 3-0 defeat in Athens earlier in the season but a greater challenge is expected from the Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders.

"From what we have seen of our opponents, they are a very strong team," said Tziolis.

"If you look at their league standing, you can see that they are a strong team. They play high-tempo football and our objective is to try to lower the tempo of the game.

"We haven't concentrated on any particular players but we know the characteristics of the team."

Rangers have not conceded a goal in their last six matches but Pana coach Jose Peseiro is determined to see that run of clean sheets come to an end.

"When the first game is away from home, then it is better to score," he said.

"It would be better to lose 2-1 than to draw 0-0."

Peseiro has had Rangers watched on a number of occasions and has been impressed by what he has seen so far.

But he has little doubt about which team will come out on top.

He said: "Every coach goes in to games wanting to win and I expect to win. It will be a difficult game and I respect Rangers.

"We have done some scouting and I have watched four or five games. I have seen Rangers play very well in the first stage of the Champions League.

"But despite the quality of the players and the coach we believe it is possible to win here."
