Crolla steps in to take British title
Anthony Crolla made his opportunity count as he beat John Watson for the vacant British lightweight title.
Crolla took the fight on short notice when champion Gavin Rees pulled out of the fight with a nose injury at the end of January, vacating the belt at the same time.
But a strong display from the 24-year-old, who made the step-up from super featherweight to meet Watson, ended with a knockout in the ninth round.
Crolla started the stronger, having the best of the opening rounds until Watson started to get back on terms in the fourth and fifth.
Determined defence and busy work on the front foot gave Crolla the advantage, and sensing an opportunity in the ninth he produced a flurry of authoritative punches before tagging Watson with his right-hand.
