Curbs: Let's lift Hammers fans

Thu 13 Mar, 12:00 PM

Alan Curbishley wants West Ham's players to restore "some pride" in their fans, and has no complaints over recent speculation about his job.The Hammers have suffered a trio of 4-0 defeats in the Premier League at the hands of Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea.

The disappointing run has all but ended any hopes the club had of claiming a European place this season and their boss admits that they are now just aiming to finish as high up the table as possible.

"To lose three games 4-0, albeit the opposition were quite good on the day, is disastrous," he told Sky Sports News.

"You can't legislate for it and all I can say is that when you get it wrong you get it wrong, and in the Premier League now there's no in-between. You have to get it right most weeks, otherwise you will be punished.

"We are all connected in it, but there has been a common denominator in all the games that we've conceded early and in two of them conceded again straight away so you find yourself really up against it early on, and it's difficult getting back.

"But I'm a firm believer that when the next game comes along, that's a chance to do well and we play Blackburn at the weekend and it's another chance. I think for me that's all I'm going to focus on.

"Obviously I can't run away from what's happened in the last week, but I must stress it has only been the last week.

"We find ourselves 10th in the league, we've lost our last three games and we're still 10th in the league, and if we can pick up starting this weekend then we can still start putting pressure on the teams just above us."

Curbishley was also keen to point out that any team would have struggled to maintain a high level of consistency if they were forced to deal with the number of injuries which have inflicted the Hammers this season.

"I think people forget, but I do keep reminding them as much as I can, that the players we brought in over the summer haven't played a game," he said.

"I think leading up to the Spurs game, (Scott) Parker, (Kieron) Dyer, (Julien) Faubert, (Craig) Bellamy and Bobby Zamora hadn't played 20 games between them all season - so that's a big hit for anybody.

"I've got Danny Gabbidon, James Collins out, Matty Etherington, Lee Bowyer and others and that's been basically every week, so the players that have been playing have done fantastically well and they have been putting their lot in.

"I think the last couple of games have been tough and we've got it wrong, we've all got it wrong and we've got to get back to our best and give our fans some pride back.

"The last week was painful and we've got to turn it around."

Unsurprisingly after a shocking week on the field, Curbishley has also been forced to respond to rumours off the pitch which have suggested that his days at Upton Park may be numbered.

"I think that any manager and any club, apart from perhaps Alex (Ferguson) and Arsene Wenger, really will get that speculation if they're not winning games," he said.

"We've had Rafa Benitez up at Liverpool come under pressure recently, apparently, and I think the Liverpool people issued statements to the contrary and it's the life we're in. We can't complain.

"When I was out of the game for six months, I took a step back from it and saw one or two managers who I know well come under pressure and it's part of the game now."
